Tracks alternate between short experiments in abstract ambience and longer, more loop-centric conceptualizing. Like the glowing orange fractal on the cover, sounds coalesce into beautiful patterns with geometric precision, and there's lots of numerical symbolism for math fans to ponder in GEODADDI's 66:06 minutes. While BoC's first album seemed ensconced in the security of a cozy kindergarten, GEOGADDI captures something of the terrors of leaving that world for the blinding sunshine of first grade, with track names like "Beware the Friendly Stranger" "A Is to B as B Is to C," and "Music Is Math." While not as immediately lulling as one might imagine, GEOGADDI has an inherent magic that kicks in with a vengeance after it's had time to soak into listeners' heads.

This disc offers a very fine, if brief (10 tracks) sampler of pianist Ahmad Jamal's work from the mid-1950s to the mid-'60s. On the most superficial listen, the music here seems to fall in line with the standard cool and post-bop modes of the era, but further attention reveals Jamal's exquisite sensibility as an architect of sound in the small-ensemble context. On "Concern" and the well-known "Poinciana," Jamal's penchant for a chamber-like conception of jazz is evident.

The President of Pop has a history of highly esteemed live albums, from the bare-bones 11-17-70 to the far more elaborate LIVE IN AUSTRALIA with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. So ONE NIGHT ONLY, drawn from a two-night stand at New York's famed Madison Square Garden, has a lot to live up to.
Fortunately for Sir Elton's fans, the album does not disappoint. The track list reads like a greatest hits package, including highlights from various phases of Elton's career. It doesn't hurt matters that the singer decided to breathe new life into chestnuts through the addition of some hotshot guest artists. R&B diva Mary J. Blige adds soul to "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues," and old pal Kiki Dee reprises her role as Elton's duet partner on the '70s hit "I've Got the Music in Me."
