| Plays Santa Claus: Christmas Music For Those Who've Heard Everything Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Finally Found It!! My High School music teacher played this in our Music Theory class about 30 years ago.. and I have been looking for this album ever since.... It's such a different arrangment of Xmas songs... Swing, Dixieland, Big Band... it's great! Submitted by dondurma (Honolulu, HI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The All-Day Christmas Album! This is a festive, instrumental jazz album that uses Christmas songs as its base, but then adds humour and some incredible musicians to make for an album that you can just leave playing all day. We'd listened to this album for years in our family until it was lost in a move, and a new generation got to discover it when it was re-released this year. My 9-year-old niece spent the day asking about jazz, and my 4-year-old nephew was amused by the unexpected 'bird' sounds in "Christmas Is For the Birds." Humour in the music and the liner notes are an "Ira Ironstrings" trademark, but in the re-release, Ira's identity can be revealed! Submitted by staylor (Buffalo, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? This is Xmas to us! I am astounded by the number of folks who grew up with this album!I'm also really happy to find this on CD, as we have the original vinyl which has been passed around so many times we can't keep track. It's held together with black electrical tape and we are amazed it doesn't skip. Submitted by nance d (beaverton oregon) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Actually I think it's Lou Busch! I do believe that Ira Ironstrings was actually pianst Lou Busch, a.k.a Joe "Fingers" Carr, (as his name is credited as composer on some of the songs on the original LP's label), not Alvino Rey. I think Rey functioned as the producer of the LP (and possibly played guitar). Nonetheless, a great fun CD to listen to. Submitted by rmos1957 (Michigan City, Indiana, USA) Was This Review Helpful? | | J J Jackson But It's Alright CD (1967)
Plays Santa Claus: Christmas Music For Those Who've Heard Everything
$9.95 Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between flat-out rockers like "I Dig Girls," "Come See Me (I'm Your Man)" (which was written by Jackson, covered by the Pretty Things, and then reclaimed powerfully here), and "Boogaloo Baby," midtempo groovers like "You've Got Me Dizzy" and "The Stones That I Throw," and ballads like "Try Me" and a righteous "A Change Is ...
