When Johnny Cash passed away in September 2003, American music lost one of its giants, but three months later, Lost Highway posthumously illuminated his legacy with this fascinating five-disc box set. UNEARTHED contains no less than 64 previously unreleased recordings from Cash's AMERICAN RECORDINGS years (essentially 1994-2002) that show the broad range of Cash's interests and interpretive capabilities. Accompanied, for the most part, only by acoustic guitar, he covers Neil Young (the poetic, impressionistic "Pocahontas"), Steve Earle (the rowdy rebel song "Devil's Right Hand"), Jimmy Webb (a tender "Wichita Lineman"), and others.
Cash reaches into the past and future simultaneously, performing duets with younger artists (Fiona Apple on the Cat Stevens tune "Father and Son," Joe Strummer on the Bob Marley evergreen "Redemption Song") and trawling his own memory for the old folk, country, and gospel tunes that influenced him. In fact, an entire disc is devoted to his humble-but-impassioned gospel performances. The emotional authority and overwhelming humanity Cash brings to every song cause one to marvel that these were merely the outtakes from his sessions. On the graveyard-set "The Caretaker," Cash eerily intones "Who's gonna cry when old John dies?" On the basis of this collection alone the answer should be, just about everybody.

When the first volume of Johnny Cash's AMERICAN series appeared in 1994, it would have been difficult to predict its critical and commercial success, much less the fact that an illness-beset Cash would be turning out a powerful fourth installment of the series eight years later. Like its three predecessors, AMERICAN IV is a home-recorded, bare-bones Rick Rubin production wherein Cash tackles old classics by other writers as well as more contemporary tunes by artists from the rock world, with a smattering of his own new compositions thrown in. It's also arguably the strongest since the first volume.
Now that the novelty of hearing the Man in Black tackle tunes by the likes of Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus") and Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt") has worn off, we can get past the gimmickry to fully appreciate the power of Cash's soul-baring interpretations. He brings an equal amount of gravitas to old country and folk tunes like "Streets of Laredo" and "Give My Love to Rose." To hear Cash's worn, husky, lived-in voice inhabit the world-weary narrative of the Beatles' "In My Life" and the graphic, almost spiritual romance of the Ewan MacColl-penned ballad "The First Time Ever I Saw Your ...

After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. Johnny Cash:The Greatest.
This series of CDs are a poignant tribute to the late J.C. The first disc with just his own guitar backing just goes to show what an incredible artist he was even at this late stage of his career. The others are as satisfying and the booklet gives an insight to the man and his music.

A wonderfully intimate collection of songs by an American icon. The feeling listening to 4 of the 5 cds is that Cash is in the room singing what he feels like singing - personal favorites.

In Deutschland leider zu teuer, über 100 Euro. Zum Glück kann man direkt in den USA bestellen. Lieferung war problemlos und günstig.

As a Cash Fan, this takes some beating. Great packaging and literature and even better music.
Great service from the company. The package was in the UK (London) within 5 days, then it took our idiot postal service 9 days just to move it 23 miles. Not the CD senders fault that one.
