This is and Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.

Partially recorded at NRG Studios and The Hook Studio, North Hollywood, California.

Puddle of Mudd's sophomore album finds the band both digging deeper into its grunge tendencies and broadening its musical horizons with a collection of sometimes sinewy, sometimes uncharacteristically introspective tracks. The almost restrained "Sydney" falls into the latter category, its reflective lyric adding another dimension to the band's usually testosterone-driven songwriting. And it's by no means alone here, being immediately followed by "Time Flies," an extended exercise in surprising sensitivity.

This doesn't mean POM is wimping out--far from it, with an angsty opener such as the monolithic "Away from Me." However, it perhaps signifies a shift into more elaborate, latter-day Red Hot Chili Peppers territory, especially on workouts such as the nuanced "Spin You Around" and "Change My Mind." Mostly, though, LIFE ON DISPLAY is about consolidation and musical muscle-flexing, which means that the workmanlike rhythm section of Greg Upchurch and Paul Ardito gets to show its mettle on tracks such as "Bottom" and "Freak of the World" (the latter, by the way, possessing an uber-hooky chorus). Meanwhile, singer-guitarist Wes Scantlin grabs a few more opportunities to wax splenetic about a world that just never seems to understand.

Puddle Of Mudd: Douglas John Ardito (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass); Wesley Reid Scantlin, Paul Phillips (vocals, guitar); Greg Upchurch (vocals, drums).

Additional personnel: Bill McGathy Peter Katsis, Ian Montone (triangle).

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.

4 stars Puddle of Mudd writes some of the most catchy songs
What's good about it? If it weren't for dysfunctional relationships, I don't think Puddle of Mudd would have much of a carreer. A cheating girlfriend is the focal point of "Away From Me". Its dark opening riff is instantly recognizable, and a flood of heavy guitars accentuates the chorus. "Change My Mind" explores deciet and deception. The track relys on acoustic guitars and has a much slower tempo. The string slides that are left in give the track a more authenticity. Wes Scantlin is known for his rugged, yet smooth sounding vocals that are promenently displayed on "Heel Over Head", but throws you a curve ball with the dark, errie vocals on "Nothing Left to Lose". Usually the guitars and vocals drive a song, but on "Already Gone" the guitars take a back seat to Douglas Ardito's heavy bass line. Wes sings the praises of being wasted and wants to know if you'd like to join him. "Bottom" also showcases a wicked base groove and throws in a muffled drumbeat. It's all about giving it from behind on "Spin You Around". Wes is forcefull in his vocal delivery on this addictive track. Puddle of Mudd experiment briefly with electronic style riffs on "Freak of Nature". "Cloud 9" boasts a rapid-fire open lick and an up-tempo rhythem that's not typic of the group. I think it's the fast song they've ever done. Anything bad? The only bone I have to pick with Puddle of Mudd is that I think they incorporate swears into their lyrics to come off as tough, bad-ass rock stars, when in the end they're sweaky clean. Bottom Line There's music on the radio that you like until it's played over and over again. Then there's music you hate that's played over and over again, but oddly enough you start to like it. For me, that's Puddle of Mudd's music. Say what you want about them, but Puddle of Mudd writes some of the most catchy, well-written, acoutic based songs. Every song on Life on Display is easy to identify with and sing along to, with only a few spins. The vocals are smooth, but still coarse enough for rock music. Sometimes the lyrics are a little basic and corny, but who wants deep, meaningful thoughts in their rock music.

3 stars This band is less annoying than Nickelback - voicewise
More-songs-catchier than their debut. They're taking their stride, good or bad.

5 stars Head of heel for POM
I purchased this cd at a Puddle of Mudd concert. The reason I bought it was they put on an awesome show and I loved every song they played. Being the first time I heard them I knew it was going to be a favorite of mine. They are an awesome group and are very talented. You can't go wrong with this cd. They were so good that I even went to NYC to see them perform on the carson Daly show. They were worth the travel, If you ever get the chance to see them perform live you should go, You won't regret it.

5 stars THEY ROCK
Most of the time when a band comes out their second album isn't as good as the first one, well Puddle of Mudd has outdone themselves on this one. This album is even better than the first one. The fisrt one was awesome but this one well the only word that comes to mind is ROX

Even Worse
Weird Al Yankovic Even Worse CD  (1988)

Life On Display
CD $7.59  4 stars Audio Samples
Trust Weird Al Yankovic to name an album "Even Worse" even as his recordings were getting better again. After a bit of a slump, he rebounded in 1988 by making fun of the same old guy again, Michael Jackson. Video played a big part in the success of "I'm Fat," based on "I'm Bad." In fact, one could say it was a whole new ball game for parody artists if they were expected to provide a video with state-of-the-art special effects such as the fat suit Yankovic had designed for himself, which probably cost more than the entire budget of a Homer and Jethro album. There was also a change in the relationship between Yankovic the satirist and his target, Jackson, as the latter star's hold on his audience was beginning to wear thin by the late '80s. The arrogance of "I'm Bad" was perfectly trumped by Yankovic's musical pile of lard, the appeal of the video's visuals clearly not the only ace in the hole. Near the end of the tune, Yankovic gets into a mockery of Jackson's vocal style that is both sublime and ridiculous. This is just the beginning of an album that gets richer as it gets along, with the maestro obviously benefitting from a period of reflection. He doesn't just stick to covers of what was contemporary at the time, perhaps realizing that the shallowness of the music on the radio was not going to result in great hilarity. "I Think I'm a Clone Now" takes us back to Tommy James and the Shondells and is one of Yankovic's best efforts, a perfectly realized satire that manages to come off better than the original, ...
