Singer/songwriter Kevin Johansen and his group The Nada released this debut album in 2000. The Argentina-based artist's music is Latin-flavored pop/rock, with lyrics that alternate between Spanish and English.
Kevin Johansen + the Nada's debut album, Nada, was recorded in New York City and released in 2000 by los Años Luz in Argentina and K Industrias in Spain. Most notably includes "Guacamole." Long available only as an import elsewhere as it was released prior to Johansen's deal with Sony Discos. Worth seeking out if you're enamored with Johansen and his sly musical hybrids and smart wordplay. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Nada album
$9.89 After the amazing "69 Love Songs," it's pretty safe to refer to Stephin Merritt as a genius. His skill and craftsmanship in service to the popular song puts him in the league of the great pop writers of the 20th Century. His lyrical wit can be funny, cutting, and heartbreaking simultaneously. It's never clever for the sake of being clever; it's always used to convey emotion.
Merritt's various projects are cut from the same cloth. The technical difference with Future Bible Heroes is that Chris Ewen writes the music and Stephin writes the lyrics. Otherwise, this sounds like what The Magnetic Fields have done, and it's just as brilliant. And depending on what part of the roller coaster of romance you happen to be on, you can either sing or cry along to it.
5 track EP from Stephin Merritt (Magnetic Fields, Gothic Archies, 6ths) and Christopher Ewen (Figures On A Beach) combining synth pop beats and loops with an 80's goth/alt feel. Tracks include the title track, 'My Blue Hawaii', 'Cafe Hong Kong', 'Good Thing I Don't Have Any Feelings' and 'Hopeless (Remix)'. Standard jewelcase.
Christopher Ewen (various instruments).

| | Kevin Johansen Sur O No Sur CD (2003)
Nada songs
$9.05 Quite an accomplishment, Kevin Johansen + the Nada's Sur o No Sur spans 20 tracks and innumerable ideas, resulting in one of the more interesting, creative, and eclectic Latin albums released by a major label during the early 2000s. Johansen sings, plays acoustic guitar, writes the songs, and fills the album with a wealth of witty wordplay. The guy lived in New York City for a decade, leaving the Big Apple for Buenos Aires after the recording of this album, so he's perfectly bilingual and shifts back and forth between Spanish, English, and Spanglish throughout Sur o No Sur. And not necessarily from one song to the next, either. Songs like "Star Estrella" find him flip-flopping between languages constantly, which can be fascinating if you enjoy such bilingual wordplay, especially when it's this witty. Johansen's wit extends beyond his wordplay to his music, also. Just as he plays with language and never ceases to surprise you with his usage, his songs are likewise playful. He and his band flip-flop musical styles the same way he does languages, from song to song certainly but sometimes also within the same song. This is a guy who purposefully circumvents convention, an act that is especially applicable to the often generic constraints of Latin music, with its laundry list of regional styles that often vary only on the basis of instrumentation, rhythm, or dance. So you get songs like "La Procesión," one of the album's most amazing moments: Johansen opens the song with an a cappella incantation of the Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Give it away, give it away, give it away now/Give it away, give it away, give it away now") before breaking into an energetic hybrid of flamenco and cumbia topped off by some beautiful singing in Spanish. And this is just one song among 20, some of the other more interesting ones including the title track, "Star Estrella," "Down With My Baby" (a really fun song Johansen accurately describes ...

| | Bossa N' Stones V.1 & 2 CD (2006) Limited Edition
Nada album
$16.29 This double-disc set issued by Music Brokers is partially what it says it is: bossa nova versions of Rolling Stones tunes. Even as a novelty this is stretching it -- why would any real bossa artist want to cover the Rolling Stones? In any case, a slew of minor bossa acts did sign up, and came up with some interesting versions of Stones cuts. Examples of these are Karen Souza's "Wild Horses," the Amazonics' "Let's Spend the Night Together," Anakelly's "Under My Thumb," and Urban Love's "Beast of Burden." There's also a ton of electronica here, and some of it is big booty bass like the Favela remix of "The Harlem Shuffle" by Marvin or Dual Sessions' dubby remix of "Ruby Tuesday." Unfortunately, most of the cuts here are like these last two, and have little to nothing to do with bossa. It's a come on. Ultimately, this set is for novelty freaks only. ~ Thom Jurek
Australian two CD set compiles both volumes of this popular series. Volume One is the compilation that started the Bossa Nova covers boom! Bossa N' Stones is an Electronic-tinged Bossa Nova treatment of Rolling Stones classics. They have assembled musicians and producers of different latitudes, who accepted the challenge of mixing the music of the legendary Rolling Stones, with the spirit of the Bossa Nova and contemporary electronics. Selections include classics such as 'Start Me Up', 'Satisfaction', 'Let's Spend The Night Together', 'Brown Sugar', a brilliant 'Sympathy For The Devil' and 'Angie'. After the success of the first volume (which has already gone platinum), Volume Two presents early hits like 'I'm Free', 'As Tears Go By' and 'Paint It, Black', as well as the major '70s numbers like 'Tumbling Dice', 'It's Only Rock N' Roll' and 'Emotional Rescue'. The album reaches forward into the '80s with 'Mixed Emotions', ...
