| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Incomparable CD music
$12.79 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet.
Although it took more than a year of concerts and promotional appearances, Michael Bublé's 2003 debut disc of swinging pop standards finally ascended the Billboard album chart and landed at number 47. That peak may not seem impressive at first, but in a musical world dominated ...

| | Best Of The Irish Rovers. CD (1999)
Incomparable CD music
$8.39 Recorded between 1966 and 1971. Originally released on Decca. Includes liner notes and interviews with band members by Todd Everett.
Somewhere between Bing Crosby's vocal novelties back in the '40s and the current popularity of dance troupes like Riverdance and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance, the flag of Irish music was held aloft in North America during the '60s by the success of the Irish Rovers. Patterning themselves after the Clancy Brothers (another popular group during the folk boom of the late '50s and early '60s), the group scored their ...

| | Tim Eriksen Every Sound Below CD (2004) Digipak
Incomparable music CDs
$12.05 The cover of Every Sound Below notes that Tim Eriksen had something to do with the Cold Mountain soundtrack, but it's almost hard to believe that something so traditional would have been included in a commercially made Civil War melodrama. Be that as it may, Every Sound Below is so much of a throwback to yesteryear that one could almost take the "neo" out when describing Eriksen as a neo-traditionalist. After all, when compared to a happening guy like Tim O'Brien, Eriksen sounds as if he was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains and taught to shape-note sing at a local Primitive Baptist Church. Having said this, with rare exceptions -- like "Omie Wise" -- these old songs aren't overly familiar, and Eriksen's intense performance style brings an immediacy to traditional fare that drags it into the 21st century. In this way, his versions of "Friendship," with ...
| | From the Icy Coast End Of The Line CD (2003)
Incomparable songs
$12.15 Music From the Icy Coast is a sonic landscape combining rock, electronic, and downbeat elements fueled by captive vocals, guitars, live drums, bass, and tasty electronics. From the Icy Coast was named a 2002 CMJ finalist in their search for "America's best unsigned band" after being together less than a year. Their live performance is described by The Stranger Magazine as a "big atmospheric rock vibe that has commercial radio breakthrough seemingly written into all aspects of their work". Seattle's "Icy Coast" looks far to the north of conventional music to create and define a style all their own. Howie Sennet formed From the Icy Coast in 2001 after writing the debut album "End of the Line" while taking time off from his other band (Sixty Cycle Hum). An avid fan of many avenues of electronic and rock music, he wanted to bring them together without the cliches of what much of the electronic and industrial music scene ...
