After his much-publicized feud with former collaborator and fellow Detroit native Eminem, Royce Da 5'9" emerges from Slim Shady's shadow with his sophomore release, DEATH IS CERTAIN. With a notable lack of guest rappers on this album, Royce stands on his own two feet here, backed by arrangements courtesy of top-notch producers such as DJ Premier and Carlos "6 July" Broady. Given Royce's past difficulties with Eminem and the record industry in general, it's not surprising that the formidable MC uses DEATH IS CERTAIN to vent his frustrations with fierce wit and vicious wordplay. Although Royce is considered mainstream by most standards, he reveals a strong underground hip-hop element in his rhyming technique and lyrical content. Standouts include the self-assured "Hip Hop," the relentlessly catchy "Throwback," and the imposing "Gangsta," all fine examples of a performer hitting his stride.

DEATH IS CERTAIN DEATH IS CERTAIN is undoubtedly the most consistent Hip Hop LP of 2004. The album itself is as solid as it's dark, tentative title. The album opens up with, "Reguardless", a powerful statement to industry execs and peers alike showcasing his lyrical prowess accompanied by clouded piano loops and potent bass. In "I Promise" he bares his naked soul with lines such as "I'm feeling like Nas did before he dropped Ether.." as he promises himself that he would remain humble upon achieving mainstream success. The standouts of the album would be "Hip Hop", the DJ Premier gem is one of the few instances where he seems reminiscent rather than vexed, and the 2Pac influenced "I&Me" where he lets his fans know who his true number one fan is. As the curtain tails "Something Wrong With Him" concludes the album perfectly as he holds nothing back justifying his intense anger at the rap industry. The album's only true weakness is it's strength, the raw emotion and animosity unbalances his versitality making him seem one dimesional. Fortunately, Nickle Nine's witty wordplay followed by the gritty, fierce production carries the mood on Death Is Certain rather well. Short of impeccable, this album is Royce's stamp on Hip Hop history and will be the asterisk next to the year 2004. Submitted by Leo Batista Mulattieri (Tampa, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dark, Real, and Angry!!! Death Is Certain is a dark, real, and angry album that showcases why Royce is one of the best rappers in the game today. He puts all his beefs, failures, and disapointments into crafting one of the most personal albums by any rapper ever. Songs like
"Throwback", "Hip-Hop", "TODAY", show his amazing flow and lyrical talent that is only matched by the likes of rappers like Joe Budden and Nas. He mixes songs dealing with label politcs and beef with storytelling songs like "Bomb First" and "Death Is Certain 2". And with only 1 guest apperance, you get an album full of Royce at his lyrical, personal, and maybe artistical best. This is what a hip hop album should sound like, this is a classic album that any rap fan needs to listen and appreciate and a masterpiece by a true MC. Submitted by easye7 (Holyoke, MA.
