Recording information: Isolation Records, Detroit, MI; MPA Studios, Canton, MI; Nation Studios, Southfield, MI. Photographer: John Hooks. For an artist with only one full-length to his name and no substantial commercial success to date, Royce da 5'9" went through a lot of rap-star drama, enough to fill his second, Death Is Certain, to the brink with his thoughtful reflections. It's a very personal album, shadowed heavily by his much-publicized beef with the Shady Records camp. If you don't know the story, here it is in brief: once billed as the next big thing from Detroit, following Eminem's breakthrough, Royce went from someone to no one as his big label deal with Columbia fell through, followed by an ugly war with Eminem and company that culminated in July 2003 with a street fight that got both him and D12 member Proof arrested and booked with concealed weapons charges. Royce thankfully has moved on and put aside his beef, for the most part at least. There's not a pointed dis to be found here (sans a few subversive ones about someone whose "wife is sniffin'"), just a lot of well-produced tracks with a refreshingly optimistic outlook. In fact, Royce sounds a lot like Cormega circa The True Meaning (2002) -- a talented, once-hyped rapper looking to get his career back on track after a fruitless war that had unfortunately sidetracked him and left him empty-handed. Like The True Meaning, Death Is Certain is a solid, lucid album chock-full of personal insight and forward-looking. As such, it's cathartic -- Royce has a lot of frustration to vent, and he does so at length here, reestablishing his once-lauded credentials in the process: "Beef" and "Bomb 1st" are seemingly conclusive epilogues to his war with Shady ("I'm against all this name-calling sh*t"), "I Promise" and "T.O.D.A.Y" are humble musings of self-awareness ("Am I a young MC or a one-hit wonder?"), and "Throw Back" and "Hip Hop" are mission statements of integrity (the latter another on-point DJ Premier production). There's nothing lighthearted about this album -- it's dead serious from beginning to end, accentuated all the more by Carlos "6 July" Broady's chilly throwback beats, which grace roughly half the album. In the end, Death Is Certain is certainly an underground album for the heads, one that's intended to clear the smoke and set the stage for the big comeback. ~ Jason Birchmeier After his much-publicized feud with former collaborator and fellow Detroit native Eminem, Royce Da 5'9" emerges from Slim Shady's shadow with his sophomore release, DEATH IS CERTAIN. With a notable lack of guest rappers on this album, Royce stands on his own two feet here, backed by arrangements courtesy of top-notch producers such as DJ Premier and Carlos "6 July" Broady. Given Royce's past difficulties with Eminem and the record industry in general, it's not surprising that the formidable MC uses DEATH IS CERTAIN to vent his frustrations with fierce wit and vicious wordplay. Although Royce is considered mainstream by most standards, he reveals a strong underground hip-hop element in his rhyming technique and lyrical content. Standouts include the self-assured "Hip Hop," the relentlessly catchy "Throwback," and the imposing "Gangsta," all fine examples of a performer hitting his stride. DEATH IS CERTAIN DEATH IS CERTAIN is undoubtedly the most consistent Hip Hop LP of 2004. The album itself is as solid as it's dark, tentative title. The album opens up with, "Reguardless", a powerful statement to industry execs and peers alike showcasing his lyrical prowess accompanied by clouded piano loops and potent bass. In "I Promise" he bares his naked soul with lines such as "I'm feeling like Nas did before he dropped Ether.." as he promises himself that he would remain humble upon achieving mainstream success. The standouts of the album would be "Hip Hop", the DJ Premier gem is one of the few instances where he seems reminiscent rather than vexed, and the 2Pac influenced "I&Me" where he lets his fans know who his true number one fan is. As the curtain tails "Something Wrong With Him" concludes the album perfectly as he holds nothing back justifying his intense anger at the rap industry. The album's only true weakness is it's strength, the raw emotion and animosity unbalances his versitality making him seem one dimesional. Fortunately, Nickle Nine's witty wordplay followed by the gritty, fierce production carries the mood on Death Is Certain rather well. Short of impeccable, this album is Royce's stamp on Hip Hop history and will be the asterisk next to the year 2004. Submitted by Leo Batista Mulattieri (Tampa, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dark, Real, and Angry!!! Death Is Certain is a dark, real, and angry album that showcases why Royce is one of the best rappers in the game today. He puts all his beefs, failures, and disapointments into crafting one of the most personal albums by any rapper ever. Songs like
"Throwback", "Hip-Hop", "TODAY", show his amazing flow and lyrical talent that is only matched by the likes of rappers like Joe Budden and Nas. He mixes songs dealing with label politcs and beef with storytelling songs like "Bomb First" and "Death Is Certain 2". And with only 1 guest apperance, you get an album full of Royce at his lyrical, personal, and maybe artistical best. This is what a hip hop album should sound like, this is a classic album that any rap fan needs to listen and appreciate and a masterpiece by a true MC. Submitted by easye7 (Holyoke, MA. Death Is Certain
$15.15 The first single 'Run It!; is exploding at radio & video outlets nationwide! The video was directed by Erik White, whose credits include Nelly, Petey Pablo, Fabolous, Ying Yang Twins, Trick Daddy, Jo Jo and more! The 'Run It!', video is in Big 10 rotation on MTV and premiered in the Top 10 on TRL! It is also on Hip Hop Confidential, in Very Heavy rotation on BET, and also on FUSE! BMG. 2005.
Personnel: Chris Brown (vocals); Jermaine Dupri, Noah, Juelz Santana, Bow Wow (rap vocals). Based on the runaway success of his first single, "Run It!" it was clear that 16-year-old Chris Brown was onto something. The song, which rides a pulsing hip-hop beat with Brown's smoothly styled R&B vocals coming in over the top, shot straight to the top of the charts, virtually guaranteeing an ecstatic reception for his full-length self-titled debut. Brown lights upon a clever formula here by combining edgy tracks with a sultry urban-contemporary delivery, and bringing to that mixture the fresh-faced innocence of teen pop acts. (In the photo spread inside the CD's booklet, Brown is dressed in what looks like a Boy Scout uniform.) Like Usher, whom he resembles in some respects, Brown's music is likely to make 15-year-old girls swoon, yet there is a vitality ...
