| | Trojan Ska Revival CD - Import
Entries in the Trojan Box Set series have bounced between "essential" and "purists only." Now Ska Revival comes along to screw it all up, greatly lowering the series' credibility. Despite the fact that none of the bands here were on Trojan proper, the label's influence on them was no doubt very heavy. The Specials and the Selecter were carrying on Trojan's spirit when the label wasn't, so maybe this collection isn't such a stretch after all. Bad news is that good old Receiver Records -- whose motto must be "Great Artists, Lesser Recordings" -- have gone back to their old ways and taken their latest acquisition, Trojan, down with them. The Specials, the Selecter, Bad Manners, and even the Special Beat tracks are live and often by later lineups of the bands. Worst of all, the limp Desmond Dekker tracks are from a poor 1995 team-up with what was left of the Specials. This could have been interesting and valid collection had all these tracks appeared in their original versions, not this hodgepodge of recordings that Receiver had already released on less prestigious compilations. The only thing the set has going for it is that it's the easiest -- and probably only -- way to hear the shambolic and rightfully forgotten Coventry Automatics. ~ David Jeffries
2003 compilation featuring 50 tracks by some of the leading groups of the Two Tone era including The Specials, The Selecter, The Special Beat, Bad Manners, & more. Three paper sleeves housed in a clamshell box. Trojan. Trojan Ska Revival Review

Can't Stop a Man collects some of Beres Hammond's biggest Jamaican hits, beginning with his first, "One Step Ahead" from 1976, a song produced by Willie Lindo. There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ...

Trojan Ska Revival CD music
$18.29 BGO Records has done all listeners a favor with this double-CD release -- Winds of Change and The Twain Shall Meet were the two most accessible albums in the output of Eric Burdon & the Animals, both aglow in the spirit of the Summer of Love and its long aftermath in San Francisco, and if they had flaws (mostly an over-reliance on Burdon as a profound talker on Winds of Change and too little time to do the extended songs full justice on The Twain Shall Meet), they were still solid pieces of psychedelia. Indeed, although they're often maligned by the critics and scholars, this version of the Animals produced some of the ballsiest, most intense and involving psychedelic music of the late '60s in the form of these two albums ...
