Trojan Ska Revival album
$12.05 The second oldest of the late reggae legend Bob Marley's sons, Stephen Marley has maintained a low-profile career since the 1980s, first as a key member of his brother Ziggy's band, the Melody Makers, and more recently as a solo performer. MIND CONTROL is Marley's second solo album, and in the footsteps of his younger brother Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, Stephen is incorporating a strong hip-hop influence into his dancehall reggae tunes. Aside from a cover of the old R&B chestnut "Lonely Avenue," the songs are all originals that layer urban beats and occasional nods to Afrobeat ...
| | Bob Marley African Herbsman CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Trojan Ska Revival CD music
$12.09 One of Bob Marley & the Wailers' finest collections, AFRICAN HERBSMAN belongs alongside CATCH A FIRE and NATTY DREAD as an essential Marley recording. There are three reasons why AFRICAN HERBSMAN is significant. For starters, it is a treasure trove of some of Marley's best songs. Though these tunes were written and recorded in the early 1970s, Marley would revisit them--in concert and in re-recordings--throughout his career. The celebratory "Lively Up Yourself," the winsome and wise "Small Axe," the swaying "Don't Rock the Boat," and the escapist dream "Kaya," are only a few of the gleaming gems here.
More importantly, perhaps, AFRICAN HERBSMAN captures the Wailers at their peak as a band. With Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh's high, sweet harmonies prominent throughout, and the Barrett brothers' impeccable rhythms, the Wailers are an unstoppable unit (and provide a focus lost on some of Marley's solo albums). But the most distinguishing quality of these sessions is Lee "Scratch" Perry's remarkable, unique production. Unlike the rock-oriented sound of the Chris Blackwell-produced CATCH A FIRE (released the same year), HERBSMAN has ...

| | Patton/Tora! Tora! Tora! CD (1997) Original Soundtrack
Trojan Ska Revival music CDs
$13.89 PATTON was previously released on Cassablanca Records. This is the premiere recording of TORA! TORA! TORA!.
This 1997 release of the music for PATTON features composer Jerry Goldsmith conducting the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The performance is a robust reading of the score, giving breath to Goldsmith's sweeping, martial themes. Naturally, given the film's subject, much of the music has an overt militaristic flavor. Various battle sequences in the film are represented by processionals, marches, and bombastic swells of sound characterized by ruffling drums and brass fanfare (one figure in particular--a series of triplets played on a trumpet--is the score's most consistent leitmotiv).
But much of the score is surprisingly meditative, with lush orchestral passages that evoke the complexities of Patton's personality (including his religious devotion). ...
