(10 Customer Reviews)
Songwriter-vocalist Amel Larrieux's style is as multihued as the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York in which she was raised. Knocking around in the mix are the elasticity and heartbreak of Billie Holiday's jazz, the deep soul of post-Motown R&B circa the Isley Brothers, the defiance of country rockers like Bonnie Raitt, and the modern urban-pop know-how of Alicia Keys. Amel first garnered attention as the singing half of critically acclaimed jazz-tinged R&B duo Groove Theory, and the music continues that line on much of her second album, BRAVEBIRD, particularly on funky message-songs such as "Giving Something Up" and the African-scat/hip-hop hybrid "Congo."
Throughout the satisfying album, she uses her immense talents to their utmost over an assortment of sultry tunes, each born out of the love between herself and her husband and co-writer, Laru. This bond lends an aura of impenetrable sincerity to compositions like "We Can Be New" with its images of trees intertwining. The most blissfully naked moment is "Sacred," where over a gradually more insistent acoustic guitar, she channels Janis Ian, languorously musing about the world, concluding, "maybe there never was [anything sacred] at all" with perfect understatement--a sweet, simple, honest notion that exemplifies a softly powerful record.

Amel Larrieux Bravebird Songs Bravebird Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews don't sleep on Amel! Ever since groove theory, i've been stuck on her. Her sweet, honey vocals soar over her complex melodies and music. It's too bad the radio companies aren't willing to take a risk and showcase her talents because the rest of the world is missing out!
This CD was great. It's different, and unique, and the songs MEAN something. (which i find is lacking in many artists today) Submitted by MzChin (Toronto, ON) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
You Got To Buy This CD. Child is fantastic! Not only that she's positive and spiritual, but she got talents. Even her nine year-old daughter Sky is the drummer throught out the whole album!
I'm telling you, if you want to listen to real music, get the CD. Submitted by kimberlygrandison2001 (New York City) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Bravebird, Indeed... I've been waiting for this album for 5 years, ever since I heard a demo for "Bravebird", the title track. 5 years later, it's the freshest song on the disc. On the rest of the disc, Amel is her moody, introspective self, which is not a bad thing... It'll be nice to see her stretch a bit more, though. Nice music, away from the mainstream. Bravebird
$11.49 The music of Rhian Benson is an exciting mélange of R&B, soul, jazz, reggae, hip-hop, and worldbeat. Her debut recording titled Gold Coast features the stunning vocalist interpreting 13 songs that she wrote and co-produced with James Poyser (Lauryn Hill, the Roots, Jill Scott) and Bob Power (D'Angelo, A Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu). Her warm, jazz-influenced vocals are a natural result of her strong musical heritage (both of her parents are musicians) and by being nourished and encouraged by the profusion of music and musicians that surrounded her during her upbringing in Africa, India, and England. Gold Coast opens with "Words Hurt Too," a sad ballad about the ...
| | Van Hunt CD (2004) Enhanced CD
Bravebird
$9.99 With too much "rhythm" and not enough "blues," contemporary R&B circa 2004 has become overly slick, commercial, and almost emotionless, no matter how hard the vocalist is expressing his love jones. Which is why Van Hunt's debut is so refreshing. ...

$12.65 THE STORY OF MC. TOOLBOXXI started off in life as a popular reject amongst my peers. I couldn’t go outside my gate until I was 18 (strict parents). So I decided to find a way to escape my reality. I decided to use my Dad’s toolbox to break out of the gate. It didn’t work, but something better happened to me.One day my ‘prison break’ attempt was cut short when I dropped the toolbox on the ground. There was an amazing sound that transpired! It was a harmonic sound that left me frozen. I decided, from that moment, that I didn’t mind being locked up in my house like a caged Refugee. I started using the tools as instruments, and all of a sudden…A STAR WAS BORN!I became a slave to the toolbox. I would get home from school and write rhymes to the sound of Hammers, Monkey Wrenches and Screwdrivers hitting my bedroom floor (no carpet). I no longer need friends (well, I actually didn’t have any friends) because I had my ...
| | Sparks Exotic Creatures Of The Deep CD (2008) (Import) England
Bravebird
$14.79 Bookended as it is by Russell Mael's wordless chorale vocals that help kick off the opening "Intro" and which recur in the soothing but strange conclusion to the final song, "Likeable," not to mention similar moments throughout the album, it's almost too easy to summarize Exotic Creatures of the Deep as Sparks' most involved tribute to the Beach Boys, late-'60s version. But as with nearly everything the band's ever done, one can't sum up an album quite as simply as that, and Exotic Creatures, if not as completely explosive as Hello Young Lovers at its heights, finds the rude creative health of the Maels still firing on all cylinders. The amalgam of orchestrations, feedback, and a new millennium's electronics evident in recent releases often sounds all the more integrated here, readily heard on the post-one-night-stand scenario lead single "Good Morning." Similarly, multi-part arrangements recur on efforts like "Strange Animal" and the outrageous "(She Got Me) Pregnant." That all said, the other key element to Sparks' continued success -- Ron Mael's catchy melodies and utterly skew-whiff take on humanity and its foibles -- equally holds sway, and if time lends some inevitable familiarity to the tropes, the variations are still strong enough to work wonders. The simmering political discontents that had already popped up in the Maels' 21st century work crystallize with "Let the Monkey Drive," a slam on a certain 43rd president with some of Ron's angriest piano parts, while they tip their hat to a noted disciple with "Lighten Up, Morrissey" (actually meant to be a portrayal of a despairing man whose girlfriend ...
