There's definitely a concept of a journey about this album, but it's the kind of trip you'll be happy to make. Yes, it's gypsy music, coming from a Serbian home, but traveling everywhere -- note the Indian inflection on "India Rroma," where guitar sounds like sitar, balancing a delicate violin line over chord changes that could almost have been lifted from "Get Back," filtered through, well, China. Odd, but enticing, which is also true of the rest of the disc, like the breakdown that comes at the end of "Me Sem Rrom," where cimbalom and violin take off like Serbian bluegrass, after a track that gives a nod to the U.S. with its bluesy inflections. Considering that Olah Vince has been playing professionally for 40 years, this is a major step forward not just for himself, but for gypsy music in general, an adventurous, daring disc. On "Vranje-Rromans," with guest trumpeter Boban Markovic heavily overdubbed in a fanfare, Vince's guitar work connects the dots between flamenco, the Balkans, and the Middle East in a magnificent way. And he's not afraid of being quieter, either, as on "A#-Rromans," a lyrical piece with echoes of a fading past. A magnificent record. ~ Chris Nickson

Waltz Rromano songs
$10.69 Sometimes during a lunar eclipse, Earth's atmosphere casts the moon in a reddish glow, a lovely space oddity embraced by poets as a symbol of passion, suffering, and the human condition. It's likely that Secret Garden intended to evoke this by naming their album after the phenomenon, since passion and melancholy are in abundance here.
MOON continues the formula that worked so well on their best-selling predecessor, DAWN OF A NEW CENTURY: Celtic-flavored orchestral pieces by pianist/composer Rolf Lovland, featuring Fionnuala Sherry's fervent violin and a series of guest vocalists. "You Raise Me Up" blends the most stirring elements of Celtic and gospel music, and features both a British gospel choir and Irish choral group behind Brian Kennedy's heartfelt vocals. "Greenwaves," with Karen ...

$10.15 ARCANUM was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.
Nick Webb and Greg Carmichael, the duo core of Acoustic Alchemy, forego the traditional greatest-hits route by taking an amazingly fresh approach to the concept on their ninth venture Arcanum, which presents the spruced-up live performance evolution of nine old favorites along with three solid new tracks. Yet the best-selling British melodizers even twist the conventions of a typical concert disc by opting to record those takes at England's legendary Pinewood Film Studios, away from the roaring crowds and in the presence of string members of the London Metropolitan Orchestra. The most striking new element is the explosive electric guitar approach of longtime cohort/former producer John Parsons, who adds some staggering zing to the kinetic "Reference Point" and "Casino," ...

Waltz Rromano album
$5.95 The ninth album by the Chieftains came at a traumatic time for the group, which had recently lost two founding members, tin whistle player Sean Potts and multi-instrumentalist Martin Tubridy, and was starting to be considered past its prime by some who felt that the ensemble had stagnated artistically. 1980's CHIEFTAINS 9: BOIL THE BREAKFAST EARLY blows a spirited raspberry to that idea.
Replacing Potts and Tubridy with the enthusiastic flute player Matt Malloy (formerly of the Bothy Band and Planxty), the group sounds re-energized. ...
