One look at Scarling might suggest that they're a new batch of goth-inclined neo-hipsters ready to sell themselves to America's disaffected youth in the wake of the breakthrough of Evanescence. However, while a spin of their debut full-length, Sweet Heart Dealer, confirms that legions of mopey kids should go for this big-time, it's also clear that this band has an awful lot more going for them than the surfaces might suggest. While dominated by the massive guitar sounds of Christian Hejnal and Rickey Lime, Scarling's songs display a canny pop sensibility that bobs just beneath their aural surface, and former Jack Off Jill vocalist Jessicka's voice seems to have gained some welcome depth and texture in the context of her new band. Hejnal and Jessicka have cited Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine as key influences on Scarling's approach, and it shows -- rather than going for standard-issue Marshall-stack crunch, Hejnal and Lime utilize feedback, drones, and floating masses of overtones to give these seven songs an attack that could be described as a loving pummel that embraces as it bruises. And you can actually sing along with "Band Aid Covers the Bullet Hole" without hurting yourself, which is no small feat. Sweet Heart Dealer is a remarkably accomplished debut from a band with very real potential. ~ Mark Deming

| | Lacuna Coil In A Reverie CD (1999)
Sweet Heart Dealer CD music
$13.85 On its 1999 full-length debut, IN A REVERIE, the Italian goth-metal ensemble Lacuna Coil offers up a melodic yet moody set of songs that prefigures the successful formula of Arkansas's Evanescence by years. While the group features both male and female vocalists, singer Cristina Scabbia often steals the show with her expressive voice, which is equally effective on amped-up, ...
| | Lacuna Coil Unleashed Memories CD (2001)
Sweet Heart Dealer music CDs
$12.85 Lacuna Coil's second full-length album successfully combines the backbone of metal with the ethereal trappings of goth. While vocalist Cristina Scabbia gives the band their sonic calling card, additional vocals from the group's male singer, Andrea Ferro, add tonal variety and balance. Rarely succumbing to heavy-handedness, Lacuna Coil escapes the stylistic straitjacket of the goth/metal formula, making them more accessible than many of their peers. ...
| | Lacuna Coil Comalies CD (2002)
Sweet Heart Dealer songs
$12.79 Representing a classic case of delayed fame, Italian goth-metal act Lacuna Coil broke into the American music consciousness via a much talked-about showing on the Ozzfest 2004 second stage, nearly two years after the release of their third album, COMALIES. Similar to its American counterparts Evanescence, this European sextet features the dual vocals of Cristina Scabbia and her male counterpart, Andrea Ferro. Despite the liberal amounts of keyboards added to the mix, guitarists Cristiano Migliore and Marco Biazzi more than hold their own, pumping choppy riffs into the 1980s-sounding "Self Deception" and the simmering opener "Swamped." What makes Lacuna Coil so unique in an often musically conservative genre is the band's ability to dabble with ethereal dynamics. Such is the case with the soaring title cut and equally potent "The Ghost Woman and the Hunter," both of which blend neo-classical riffing, swirling synth ...

| | Hothouse Flowers Born CD (1998)
Sweet Heart Dealer songs
$10.49 Parring down their previously expansive rock sound, Ireland's Hothouse Flowers perform as an intimate three-piece on BORN. tracks include "Forever More" and "You Can Love Me Now."
Five years after delivering Songs from the Rain, Hothouse Flowers returned from a self-imposed exile with Born. During their time off, Liam O'Maonlai had a side-project with Tim Finn called ALT, but that group's boozy charm is nowhere to be heard on Born. Instead, the group has scaled back, losing saxophonist Leo Barnes and drummer Jerry Fehily, and crafted a solid record quite similar to their Van Springsteen early records. They take an ill-advised stab at post-grunge, but the remainder of the ...

| | Pete Fountain At Piper's Opera House CD (1994)
Sweet Heart Dealer CD music
$12.05 Clarinetist Pete Fountain leads a fairly strong group on this set, which was reissued on CD in 1993. Recorded live in Virginia City, Nevada, one has to put up with some raving from the announcer, but otherwise the music is enjoyable. Fountain is joined by the underrated trumpeter John Thomas, the great tenor Eddie Miller, trombonist Bob Havens, pianist Merle Koch, bassist Bunky Jones and drummer Nick Fatool for a straightforward set of Dixieland jams and swing-era ballads. ...
| | Ben Harper There Will Be Light CD (2004)
Sweet Heart Dealer music CDs
$11.29 This collaboration between Ben Harper and the Blind Boys of Alabama draws heavily from blues and gospel traditions. Many of the songs on THERE WILL BE A LIGHT, particularly "Take My Hand" and "Mother Pray," are highly devotional. However, unlike many of the spiritual records on the market, this album is musically diverse and non-formulaic. And, despite the finely wrought production, Harper retains an earthy, organic feel throughout this intimate outing, which relies more on subtlety and nuance than blatant preaching.
