| | Fall Dragnet CD - Import Fall Discography of CDs
British release featuring 11 extra songs and a comprehensive booklet. The Fall's second album, released the same year as their debut (1979), refines its predecessor's somewhat embryonic approach, simplifying the sonic attack and acheiving ... Full Descriptiongreater concision and sense of mission. Mark E. Smith's lyrical themes are a bit darker, but still juggle post-punk sociopolitical commentary with dense, imagistic wordplay. Perhaps most importantly, DRAGNET marks the arrival of guitarist Craig Scanlon and bassist Steve Hanley, who would prove crucial to the band's progression over the next few years. Scanlon and Marc Riley's scrappy, lo-fi guitar din is appropriately discordant and repetitive, emphasizing the bleak societal framework from which the album emerged.
The song structures are pared down to basic, almost primal extremes, making for a more instant communication of intent, with Smith's disgruntled observations delivered over purposefully primitive, occasionally martial bashing. DRAGNET provides the framework from which the Fall would continue to fashion their trademark sound over their next couple of releases.
2004 deluxe expanded reissue of 1979 album features 22 tracks including 11 rare bonus tracks, 'Rowche Rumble', 'In My Area', 'Fiery Jack', '2nd Dark Age', 'Psykick Dancehall 2', 'Rowche Rumble' (Take 2, Take 3 Take 4, & Take 5), & 'In My Area' (Take 1, Take 2), released for the first time from original tapes. Includes expansive booklet & slipcase. Castle.Q (4/04, p.131) - 4 stars out of 5 - "DRAGNET is Mark E Smith and chums in willfully difficult but imaginatively fertile form..." Dragnet music CDs
$10.39 Long out of print in the United States before its 2004 reissue, PORCUPINE, Echo & the Bunnymen's third album, has garnered a reputation for being as prickly as its namesake. Although the record is lined with jagged guitars and is arguably the band's darkest offering, these aspects suit the Bunnymen just fine. Ian McCulloch, in particular, sounds right at home on this brooding set of songs, with his deep, Jim Morrison-esque vocals perfectly conveying his intriguing, shadowy tales.
PORCUPINE is front-loaded with its two key singles--the startling "The Cutter" and the strangely grand "The Back of Love." Both songs benefit from the dramatic string playing of Shankar, who also lends an ominous drone to "Heads Will Roll." Throughout the album, McCulloch conjures up vivid lyrical imagery with his powerful voice, from the demonic depths of "My White Devil" and "Higher Hell" to the soaring heights of "God Will Be Gods" and "In Bluer Skies." The 2004 expanded edition includes five alternate versions of album tracks, along with the excellent B-side "Fuel" ...
| | Fall Live At The Witch Trials CD (1979) (Import) +8 Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom
Dragnet songs
$25.45 The long, strange saga of the Fall, arguably the UK's first post-punk band, begins with LIVE AT THE WITCH TRIALS. The group's 1979 debut album was recorded in-studio (despite its title) during a single day, fully capturing the urgency of both the times and the music. Punk poet Mark E. Smith and his ragtag crew had actually been playing in one form or another since '77, so their sound here is surprisingly mature.
Nevertheless, there are some obvious differences between WITCH TRIALS and the style the Fall would develop over the next few years. While the jagged, angular guitars, herky-jerky rhythms, and apocalypse-now lyrics are all in place, there's more of a link to the past; a number of the songs are built around what could almost be conventional blues-rock riffs, and the Ginsberg-goes-to-Manchester frenzy of Smith's best-known material hasn't quite been reached here. Still, this is bold, striking stuff, new territory being gamely charted out by the band, who could never have guessed how seminal WITCH TRIALS would become.
2004 expanded deluxe reissue of 1979 album features 41 tracks including 30 bonus tracks. Disc one contains 10 of the bonus tracks, 'Bingo-Master's Break-Out', 'Psycho Mafia', 'Repetition', 'It's A New Thing', 'Various Times', 'Dresden Dolls', 'Psycho Mafia', 'Industrial Estate', 'Stepping Out', & 'Last Orders'. Disc two is a bonus disc containing 20 extra tracks, featuring 8 BBC session tracks, 'Rebellious ...

$39.39 Formed in 1976, The Fall have released around 50 singles, 25 studio albums, and perhaps 50 live and compilation albums. The band has gone through numerous personal changes over the years (there have been over 30 different line-ups so far) but ever present is the enigma that is Mark E Smith-musical genius, Salford's finest poet, every hournalist's worst nightmare, working class hero. Dubbed the 'Grumpiest Man in Pop' by the NME, Mark E. Smith has been carving his jaundiced ...

Dragnet album
$11.79 Ayers left the Soft Machine for a solo career when his basic pop leanings appeared at odds with the intense jazz/rock of his former colleagues. This album was a cult favourite at the end of the 60s for no reason other than that Ayers was well liked because he was ever so slightly mad. Take a look and listen at the content of this album: 'Song For Insane Times', 'Eleanor's Cake (Which Ate Her)' and 'Stop This Train (Again Doing It)'. Through the haze of quirkiness there is a strong light melodic feel to much of the music, and Ayers ...

$13.35 Although usually classified as a blues musician, Walter "Wolfman" Washington draws inspiration equally from funk, soul, R&B, and the rootsy sounds of his native New Orleans. DOIN' THE FUNKY THING (2008), Washington's first studio album in 10 years, does not advertise falsely. Each of the disc's 10 tracks pulses with hip-shaking energy, thanks not only to Washington's gravelly, down-home vocals and tasteful guitar licks, but to ...
