Buddy Ebsen played the role of "Uncle Jed" on THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES.
The subtitle to this one's ''Everybody's Favorite Hillbilly,'' and while Buddy had a distinguished acting career both on stage and in the movies (e.g. 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'), he will indeed forever be remembered as Uncle Jed on 'The Beverly Hillbillies'. And not, we must admit, for his singing ability, for his voice might well be characterized as crude (amateurish, that is). But if ol' Uncle Jed (or Barnaby Jones, whichever you prefer) though full of homespun character, wants to take a few potshots at classic country tunes, we aren't going to plug our ears! We're going to give this TV icon the sendoff he deserves and release this 1965 album, which has Pleasant Williams and the Tennessee Sunshine Singers lending a countrypolitan hand to Buddy's renditions of 'Howdy' ('Come right in, the coffee pot is hot on the stove') along with 5 Hank Williams' covers & more. 12 tracks in all. Collectors' Choice. 2003.
Includes liner notes by Joseph F. Laredo. Buddy Ebsen Says Howdy Songs Says Howdy Review

Says Howdy
$14.54 Based on title alone, it would seem that SOUTHERN VOICE picks up on the harder country edges of LET IT GO, but that's not the case: this is Tim McGraw's rockiest album yet, opening with a slow, spacy crawl called "Still" that would not be out of place on a record by a U2 knockoff and taking the occasional detour to Nickelback territory on the Chad Kroeger co-written "It's a Business Doing Pleasure with You." That tune bristles with Kroeger's barely veiled, unwitting hostility, something that the big-hearted McGraw doesn't wear well and it's something he wisely side-steps on the rest of the record, ...
| | Terri Clark The Long Way Home CD (2009)
Says Howdy
$11.18 Four years after her final Mercury Nashville album, LIFE GOES ON, a wiser, bloodied, but unbowed Terri Clark emerges on the THE LONG WAY HOME. This self-produced, self-released album is on her own Bare Tracks imprint, distributed by Capitol. Clark wrote or co-wrote every track on THE LONG WAY HOME, a rockin' contemporary country record that sets its own standard for excellence, in its songwriting and production, and, of course, in Clark's absolutely electric and soul-baring performance. It's a contemporary country record, but one ...
| | Taylor Swift Fearless CDs (2009) With DVD; Bonus Tracks; Special Edition
Says Howdy
$16.90 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's the only hint of girlishness here; her writing--and she had a hand in penning all 13 tracks here, with six of them bearing her solitary credit--is sharply, subtly crafted and the music is softly assured, never pushing its hooks too hard. Like many country-pop albums of the 2000s, the pop heavily outweighs the country--there aren't fiddles here, there are violins--yet the production never feels garish, a crass attempt at a crossover success. It's small-scale and sweetly ...
| | Rhythm Country And Blues CD (1994)
Says Howdy
$6.75 "Funny How Time Slips Away" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration, and "I Fall To Pieces" won the Grammy for Best Country Vocal Collaboration. "Patches" was nominated for Best Country Vocal Collaboration, and RHYTHM COUNTRY AND BLUES was nominated for Best Engineered Album.
RHYTHM COUNTRY & BLUES is a collection of duets between well-known country, R&B and blues performers. This release includes a 25-page booklet with session photographs and complete recording personnel listings.
Finally, with the release of RHYTHM COUNTRY AND BLUES, someone has had the courage, the vision and the commercial horse sense to acknowledge what several generations of musicians have recognized without reservation: That for all of their seeming differences in posture and attitude, the enduring soul of R&B and country music remains one and the same.
For those who came to music through the crucible of regional churches this might seem second nature. But from Louis Armstrong's duets with Jimmie Rodgers to the parallel paths of swing bands led by Count Basie and Bob Wills; from the modern country sounds of Ray Charles to the righteous funk groove of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm section, the rich Southern roots of American popular ...

| | Robert Earl Keen The Rose Hotel CD (2009)
Says Howdy
$12.09 THE ROSE HOTEL is Texas songwriter Robert Earle Keen's first studio album since 2005's WHAT I REALLY MEAN. Keen enlisted fellow Texan Lloyd Maines to produce him this time out and that was a solid decision. The material ranges from the title track which is one of his spun out story tunes that looks at a pair of lovers who can never quite connect as they think their meant to. Fueled by a shuffling rhythm, mandolins, Bukka Allen's accordion, and some electric guitars for support, the choruses are catchy, making for another notch in his trademark tunes belt. The cover of Townes Van Zandt's "Flying Shoes" is rocked up a bit, with a bass line that sounds like it would be more at home on a Brian Setzer Orchestra record than this one. Rock plays a real role here as it has on most of Keen's records for the past decade. "Throwin' Rocks" may have banjos and steel guitars, but its pure ...
