The romantic comedy 50 FIRST DATES finds Adam Sandler wooing Drew Barrymore in a tropical paradise. Accordingly, the soundtrack has a decided reggae bent, with pop-reggae artists Wayne Wonder and UB40 doing their thing, and even popsters like Jason Mraz getting into the island beat. The twist is that, in perhaps a subtle homage to the previous Sandler/Barrymore film THE WEDDING SINGER, almost all the songs are reggae versions of 1980s pop hits. While it may not be such a shock to find UB40 covering the Police ("Every Breath You Take"), it's unlikely that anyone ever expected to hear Ziggy Marley crooning a reggae adaptation of the Cars hit "Drive" or ska-punks 311 adding a Caribbean lilt to the Cure ballad "Love Song." It's not all reggae, though--Sugar Ray frontman Mark McGrath gets into an R&B groove on the Psychedelic Furs' "Ghost in You," and Elan Atias's take on Bryan Ferry's "Slave to Love" is pretty faithful to the original. In any case, nearly every track here offers a new slant on songs you thought you knew like the back of your hand.
