Recorded between 1964 & 2004. Includes liner notes by Matt Kent.
This collection commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Who, and covers the entire span of their career. Perhaps even more significantly, though, it includes the first new Who recordings in 22 years. The youthful vibrancy of the band's mid-1960s mod period is represented by the breathless "I Can't Explain," the sneering/stuttering youth-culture anthem "My Generation," and the proto-"All the Young Dudes" camaraderie of "The Kids Are Alright." The collection moves on through the high points of their late '60s output ("I Can See for Miles"), '70s arena rock ("Won't Get Fooled Again"), and the synth-adorned, post-Keith Moon "You Better You Bet."
After the Who's final studio album in 1982, there were sporadic reunions over the years, but no new songs. Following the death of bassist John Entwistle in 2002, there was a flurry of studio activity, as borne out by the two new tracks that close out the disc. While both "Real Good Looking Boy," a meditation on the vanity of youth, and "Old Red Wine," about the value of maturity, find Pete Townshend writing from the wisdom of age (59 in 2004), the classic Who sound is in full effect. With Roger Daltrey's wailing, rock-god vocals and Townshend's churning guitar powerfully rumbling along, these new tracks show a vital rock band far from ready to put a cap on its career.

The What Behind The Who Then and Now The "new" WHo album, The Who Then & Now covers their top songs from a 40 year time period. Hard to believe it's been that long. For both the occasional as well as the long time Who fan, this is the best of a "Best of" Of note, what makes it a 40 year range of time is 2 new songs from Pete Townsend. With Daltrey still belting it out, with a voice as strong as ever, the 2 new dingers from the boys sound old yet refreshingly new. This album made this kid (49) feel alright! Shoulda been better! This is a nice collection, but who picked the songs? Where the heck is Baba O'Reilly and Bargain???
Shoulda been a no-brainer to include those over some of the weaker ones on this.

A MUST FOR COMPLETISTS Few people have realized that this CD has some collector's gems: MY GENERATION (album version without overdubs), I CAN'T EXPLAIN (stereo mix), THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT (alternate version), SUSTITUTE (USA version with banned lirics), I'M A BOY (alternate version from MEATY BEATY BIG & BOUNCY), HAPPY JACK (different drum parts), PINBALL WIZARD (BBC version), I CAN SEE FOR MILES (different bass parts), MAGIC BUS (alternate version from MEATY BEATY BIG & BOUNCY) and WHO ARE YOU (Top Of The Pops overdubbed version). If you also add to this the new tracks and the great package, Then & NOW deserves more than 5 stars.

The Who have saved my interest in Music! Im a fairly new music fan here, Im very young and my favorite bands are the way trendy ones. But last week my mom bought me the The Who – “Then and Now” and I cant get over how great this is. I was never into this older rock stuff, but this is really good music. I saw the who have other greatest hits albums and im thinking about picking all of them up, I mean who can get sick of the Who? “The Kids are alright” and “Pinball Wizard” are my favorite tracks. I went over to itunes and downloaded “Teenage Wasteland” and im a bit upset it wasn’t included on this cd, but you cant win them all. I went ahead and downloaded a video of the who playing a live show and I cant get over how bad as* Keith Moon was at drums. My jaw just dropped and I was in awe over it. Im really considering buying a drum set after watching him play. I even heard they based the muppet “Animal” on Keith. How cool is that? Even as a new who fan I have to recommend this to everyone.
