The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes. While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. There are few surprises on Stereotyperider's covers album Under the Influence, Vol. 1, from the unimaginative title on down. Would anyone who has heard Stereotyperider's previous three albums' worth of post-hardcore indie rock be surprised to discover that they really like Archers of Loaf, the Pixies, Fugazi and the Descendents? Songs by all four of those bands, along with second-string grunge-rockers Seaweed, the proto-emo Quicksand and the Cure, appear here, all of them delivered in Stereotyperider's effective but occasionally monochromatic style. It's the Cure who come off the best, actually: their early single "Jumping Someone Else's Train" was a churning slab of dark-hued post-punk, and Stereotyperider nimbly transform it without losing the best qualities of the original. Born and raised in the Austin music tradition, Jack has earned accolades in his hometown scene. Before moving to the great Northwest in October of 2006, guitarist Jimmie Dreams of Cyril Nevilleâs Tribe 13 hired Jack to open for the Neville Brothers Band.Since leaving the South, Wilson has joined Seattleâs up and coming country and roots scene. Along with the likes of the Maldives, Sera Cahoone, Damien Jurado, Michael Vermillion, Widower, The Weary Boys (ATX) and The Whisky Swillers, Jack has graced the stages of the Tractor Tavern, the Sunset Tavern, Chop Suey, the Jewel Box Theater, the Conner Byrne Pub, and the Jules Maes Saloon. In November of 2007, Wilson joined members of the Whisky Swillers, Adam Borkowski and Jeremy Summer; former Lillydale guitarist Jason Williams; songwriter Shenandoah Davis; and hired-gun-drummer Sean Bendickson to form the Wife Stealers. Bringing elements of Austin folk-rock together with the burgeoning Seattle country revival, the Wife Stealers have enjoyed rapid success. Recording started in March 2008.
