| | Kenny Chesney Greatest Hits II CD (2009)
Folsom Prison Blues CD music
$15.59 The second collection of hit singles by one of contemporary country's most popular male singers is every bit as solid as Chesney's first best-of set. Although Chesney adopted a slightly different musical style during the period covered here--a wayfarer beach bum persona heavily influenced by Jimmy Buffett--these songs stress the craft and songwriting smarts at the core of his work. Chesney's music, as evinced on II, is a mingling of Buffett-style island tunes, soft rock, country, and pop, an agreeable mixture best heard on singles like these. Highlights include the new song, "Out Last Night," as well as "Life In Fast Forward" and "Beer In Mexico."
| | Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women CD (2009) Digipak
Folsom Prison Blues music CDs
$14.95 Dave Alvin has been exploring the outer reaches of American traditional music since the debut of his seminal country-punk outfit the Blasters in the early '80s. Very much of a piece with that band's output, DAVE ALVIN & THE GUILTY WOMEN features Alvin's trademark blend of jaunty Bakersfield rhythms and lightning-swift rockabilly licks. A few left turns like the Central Avenue-styled jump blues of "Boss of the Blues" and the ruefully apocalyptic country of "These Times We're Living In" lend the album some much-needed stylistic diversity.
| | Holly Williams Here With Me CD (2009)
Folsom Prison Blues songs
$7.98 The music on Holly Williams's 2004 debut album, THE ONES WE NEVER KNEW, surprised many because it was decidedly not country music. The daughter of Hank Williams Jr. and the granddaughter of Hank Williams, Holly made the unexpected move of delivering a mature set of adult-oriented singer-songwriter music. After several years of life experience and recovery from a serious car accident, the Nashville chanteuse returned with HERE WITH ME, a contemporary country record complete with steel guitars and tons of twang. Songs such as the single "Keep the Change," which addresses recovery from a difficult breakup, and "Three Days in Bed," a song about a torrid affair with a Frenchman, retain the introspective character of her debut, aren't afraid to embrace the family tradition.

| | Sugarland Enjoy The Ride CD (2006)
Folsom Prison Blues CD music
$9.95 With the departure of founding member Kristen Hall, Sugarland slimmed down to a duo. Losing one-third of the formula that made their debut a country/pop crossover smash might seem a daunting proposition, but ENJOY THE RIDE finds remaining members Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush not only surviving but thriving. Nettles's brassy belting has more sass and sex appeal than ever, and the in-your-face attitude on many of the pair's songs is even more brash and boundary-pushing than the most full-throttle moments on 2004's TWICE THE SPEED OF LIFE. While the uptempo tracks indicate that Sugarland has been paying attention to the Gretchen Wilson/Big & Rich camp, they're handily offset by more reflective balladic moments, making this a well-balanced RIDE.
Sugarland: Jennifer Nettles (vocals, acoustic guitar); Kristian Bush (various instruments, background vocals).
Recording information: OceanWay, Nashville, Tennessee.
