After the unexpected runaway success of COME AWAY WITH ME, where to next? The good news about Norah Jones's sophomore effort is that she and producer Arif Mardin decided to leave well enough alone in most regards. There are no screeching guitars, thumping drum machines, or padding synthesizers, and most of the tempos are slow or laid-back--way back. Guests Garth Hudson and Levon Helm of the Band contribute to "What Am I to You?" and Dolly Parton makes an appearance on bassist Lee Alexander's "Creepin' In." Jones's backing group, the Handsome Band, provides just the right stripped-down accompaniments and subtle touches to support the blessing that is her voice.
Jones knows how to luxuriate in the sumptuousness of her sound and infuse such unlikely lyrics as "my toes just touched the water" with a sensual blues sensibility. On top of all this, when it comes to phrasing, her tremendous instincts and smarts put her in rare company. What Jones does explore further is the art of songwriting, and the results here give every indication that she is on the right track.
'Feels Like Home' features 13 tracks & a host of special guests including Dolly Parton, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson of the Band, Jesse Harris, Robert Burger and Tony Scherr. Blue Note. 2004.

Spin (4/04, p.93) - "[A] better record than COME AWAY....She covers Tom Waits and Townes Van Zandt beautifully, does some cozy originals, and is brave enough to pen lyrics to a Duke Ellington theme..." - Grade: B+ Entertainment Weekly (2/13/04, p.70) - "[The] understated changes are good news; the vibe is more early Bonnie Raitt than early Sarah Vaughan." - Rating: B Q (3/04, p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[F]ar from rehashing her debut, he's made an older and wiser sequel, where the quiet magic of each song gets stronger with every listen." Uncut (3/04, p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[I]ts class is positively aristocratic."a Mojo (Publisher) (3/04, p.92) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Just a girl singer/pianist and her Handsome Band dallying around a low-key hybrid of country, folk, pop and jazz, doing their beautiful thing." As good as her first CD I purchased Nora Jones' first CD long before my friends had heard of her - and recommended her to everyone I knew. We all enjoyed and continue to enjoy the first CD and now have another - just as good - to enjoy. Submitted by sms_now (Tampa, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Nora Jones Is a Star Able to leep tall buildings in a single bound? Maybe not, but she does convey through music artistic expression the ability to profoundly convey to the listener much satisfaction. Touching upon jazz to country (with Dolly), wow, what's next? Bring "it" on! Submitted by jgibbs50 (Mesa, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nora's Sunrise Soars Nora Jones does it again, doing what she does best, sticking to her strong points. I did not like this cd as much as her first one simply because the songs weren't as strong. She could also include more material on her cd's, after all the format does allow for 70+ plus minutes. Submitted by dartess (Los Angeles) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Diana Krall Girl In The Other Room CD (2004) Enhanced CD
Feels Like Home CD music
$12.29 It may or may not be significant that Diana Krall's first album of new material since the ascendance of Norah Jones is the former's least jazzy, most pop-savvy album of her career. In any case, it marks Krall's biggest ...
| | Norah Jones Not Too Late CD (2007) Digipak
Feels Like Home music CDs
$11.39 For a young and commercially successful artist, Norah Jones has admirably avoided playing it too safe. After scoring an unlikely sales sensation and multiple Grammy award winner with 2002's torchy COME AWAY WITH ME, Jones shifted gears slightly to accent that album's country ...
| | Ray Charles Genius Loves Company CD (2004) Digipak; Enhanced CD
Feels Like Home songs
$10.45 Though Ray Charles, one of the greatest singers of the 20th century, was never in need of vocal assistance, he was no stranger to duets either (one of his finest records is a duet album with Betty Carter). For as much of a musical giant as he was, Brother Ray knew how to share the spotlight, as evidenced by GENIUS LOVES COMPANY, his final project before his 2004 passing. In keeping with the eclectic nature of Charles's artistry, ...
| | Karen Savoca On The River Road CD
Feels Like Home album
$17.75 Taking her lyrics from her upstate New York surroundings and her voice from the heavens, Karen Savoca uses her mind, her eyes, and her voice to relate and share the beauties of life. Along with right-hand man Pete Heitzman and Tom "T-Bone" Wolk (Hall and Oates, the Saturday Night Live Band), Savoca uses her chameleonic voice to connect with her music and with all who have the pleasure of hearing it. On what has been called the most important album of the year, Savoca takes the helm, mixing her voice with an astounding array of other instruments that ranges from clavinet to keyboards to conga, from marimba to mandolin, while Heitzman and Wolk provide deep waves of rhythm for her to sail on. The result is a sound that has garnered Musician Magazine's Best Unsigned Band award, an honor that Savoca is none too anxious to shake. Though "Till My Heart" opens much like Hootie and the Blowfish's "Hold My Hand" and despite the Raitt-y blues truck of "This Train," Savoca prefers grass roots to the weeds of big music, and does all she can to keep her sound original and fresh. Touring coffeehouses, clubs, and festivals, sharing her visions with intimate and immediate audiences, Savoca also shuns over-production. In fact, though listeners may swear they hear effects in the mix, aside from a few multi-tracked layers of vocal velvet, ...
