Cut Chemist is the better-known half of Jurassic 5's production team with plenty of mixtapes behind him, but now it's Nu Mark's turn. Nowhere near as showy as anything the Chemist has done, Hands On is a great headphone album where the head bobs a little slower, digging the intimate groove. Nu Mark starts with a bit of dusty-groove funk and jazz before getting to some high-quality rap. The new and exclusive track from Nu Mark and his homeboy Chali 2na, "Chali 2na Comin' Thru," is the pick of the litter, and considering the high standards throughout, that's really sayin' somethin'. MF Doom's "Saliva" (recorded under his alias Viktor Vaughn) is a gem, Organized Konfusion's excellent "Fudge Funk" is dropped at just the right moment, and All Time High's "68 and I Owe You One" is a special sleazy kind of fun. Nu Mark also works in some tracks by non-English-speaking rappers, giving the mix some extra flavor, and the weird radio show about Persian trance music that pops up throughout the album is hilarious. Nu Mark has mentioned he was listening to a lot of instrumental-only mixtapes while compiling Hands On, and it shows. He messes the tracks up a bit with his DJ skills, but this is generally a mix to just groove to. Not the most jaw-dropping DJ record ever, but you can "feel" it the whole way. ~ David Jeffries

| | Madlib Shades Of Blue CD (2003)
Hands On CD music
$11.69 Contains remixes of classic Blue Note Recordings. Tracks by Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Bobby Hutcherson, Horace Silver and The Three Sounds.
Madlib received a rare opportunity with unfettered access to the storied Blue Note archives and permission to use them as he wished for a remix/interpretation album released on Blue Note itself. The result, Shades of Blue, is really more of a Yesterdays New Quintet album, but Madlib's name is far more recognizable then his alter ego and faux-supergroup, YNQ. So, Shades of Blue features Madlib interpreting and remixing Blue Note classics such as Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" and Gene Harris' "The Look of Slim" (remixed here as "Slim's Return"). Overall, ...
| | Anthony Hamilton Comin' From Where I'm From CD (2003)
Hands On music CDs
$9.59 COMIN' FROM WHERE I'M FROM was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. "Comin' From Where I'm From" was nominated for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song.
Anthony Hamilton grew up in North Carolina, caught the eye of record companies, and released a major-label record in 1997, XTC, which was critically lauded, but mostly forgotten and quickly out-of-print. Following this setback, Hamilton hung around the music biz, working on his songwriting and background vocals, until his big break came in 2002, singing the hook for the Nappy Roots hit "Po' Folks."
The music on his second album, COMIN' FROM WHERE I'M FROM, transcends his rise-to-fame backstory. Hamilton is a soul singer in the truest sense of the phrase, a crooner with heart from the school of Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, and Teddy ...
| | J Dilla Donuts CD (2006)
Hands On songs
$12.99 Donuts was made on a hospital bed and in a home studio, on a stripped-down setup with a stack of vinyl. Released on its maker's 32nd birthday, three days before he passed away, the album has a resonance deeper than anyone could've hoped for or even imagined. Some who were close to Dilla have said that there are hidden messages in the samples, the track titles, and who knows where else. It's impossible not to speculate about some things, like the track titled "Don't Cry," the looped "broken and blue" from a version of "Walk on By," the presence of Eddie Kendricks singing "My people, hold on," or the fact that there are 31 tracks, a possible signal that Dilla survived a little longer than he expected. Then again, for every possible message, there are two or three elements that could've been designed to throw any analysis off its trail. After all, if there's ...
