Since exploding in 1995 with the indisputable classic THE INFAMOUS, the Queens, New York-based duo Mobb Deep has had a profound influence on both mainstream and underground hip-hop. AMERIKAZ NIGHTMARE proves that, once again, Havoc and Prodigy are several steps ahead of the game. The album opens with the claustrophobic, gun-toting title track, which finds producer Havoc in familiar territory, assaulting the senses with distorted, multi-layered synthesizers and crashing percussion. On track two, "Win or Lose," the Alchemist samples Jean Plum's "Here I Go Again" as Havoc and Prodigy discuss the finer points of hustling. Elsewhere, the single "Got It Twisted" makes clever use of a sample from Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me with Science."
In typical hip-hop fashion, outside artists add their own special flavor to several tracks. Standouts include Nate Dogg's ridiculously catchy chorus on "Dump" and Lil Jon's mere presence on "Real Gangstaz." The record also features Kanye West, who contributes another superior track, the Organized Noize-infused "Throw Your Hands (In the Air)." AMERIKAZ NIGHTMARE is pure, unadulterated hip-hop, a lesson for aspiring rappers and a gift to fans of the genre.

Vibe (p.146) - 3 1/2 out of 5 - "[T]hey're putting the murda back in the music with their sixth album, AMERIKAZ NIGHTMARE, a defiant middle finger to those who'd started writing their eulogy....M-O-B-B shows a renewed confidence." Amerikaz Nightmare album
$10.79 While the RZA is the Wu-Tang Clan's beat-driver and Ol' Dirty Bastard garners the most attention with his high-profile dementia, Method Man is arguably the group's fulcrum. One of the collective's first hits was entitled "Method Man," and he was the first to bust out of the solo gates with the hugely successful TICAL in 1994. Blessed with his signature gruff voice and a twisted lyrical prowess, Method Man has consistently released his particular brand of madness with a proficient calculation befitting his name.
As with the Ghostface record released in early 2004, TICAL 0: THE PREQUEL contains fewer hints than usual of the distinctive Wu world. RZA introduces the record, Ghostface and Raekwon drop by for one track apiece, but that's about the sum of Wu representation on the album. Method's rapping/acting partner Redman pops up for one track, the instant classic "We Some Dogs," which also features the inexhaustible Snoop Dogg. On this ...

The world is spinning around nonstop in Banks's brain, and there is clearly not enough time for it all to get out. However, in the course of THE HUNGER FOR MORE, he tackles everything from the simple topics of love and sex and life on the streets to problems like bad karma and getting racially profiled ...

Amerikaz Nightmare music CDs
$21.69 CHEAP TRICK, IN COLOR and HEAVEN TONIGHT are also available separately in newly remastered versions.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Principally recorded at Kendun Recorders, Los Angeles, California in 1977. Includes reissue liner notes by Greg Kot.
It's sometimes easy to forget that for a period in the late '70s, Cheap Trick were the best straight-up rock band America had to offer. Their first three albums are all classics, lurking stylistically somewhere between pounding arena-size hard rock and quirky power pop.
CHEAP TRICK is the rawest of the three, with lacerating, snotty tracks such as "ELO Kiddies," "Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School," "He's a Whore," and "The Ballad of TV Violence" all instant anthems. IN COLOR is a smoother, poppier affair, with "I Want You to Want Me" delineating the glittering direction the band's later albums would take. HEAVEN TONIGHT kicks off with the group's masterpiece "Surrender," four minutes of nonstop hooks and guitarist Rick Nielsen's most drop-dead ironic lyrics ever. This box set, featuring copious liner notes and bonus tracks, is essential power pop.
Recorded at The Record Plant, New York, New York in 1976 and 1977. Includes original liner notes by Eric Von Lustbader and reissue liner notes by Greg Kot.
Recorded at The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California and Sound City, Van Nuys, California ...
