Lil' Wayne has been in the national spotlight since his days as the youngest member of the Dirty South's Hot Boys. On his fourth solo record, THA CARTER, Wayne is almost wholly on his own. There are no big-name guest stars (as with Petey Pablo's memorable turn on Wayne's previous album), only recurring shots from producer Mannie Fresh and Cash Money head Bryan "Baby" Williams. Lil' Wayne's easy flow speaks for itself; in a relaxed Southern manner, he waits for the rhyme to unfold before unleashing a torrent of lyrical lines, with consistent, understated beats pulling the tracks along. Not as "lil'" as his name implies, Wayne hits a peak with "This Is the Carter," a brash track that captures the essence of this potent hip-hop album.
Personnel: Lil Wayne (rap vocals); Mannie Fresh, Baby (rap vocals).

I't s Weezy, baby!! Lil Wayne keeps getting tighter and tighter!! He's flows on this album is so ridicolous! I'm hot like a son of a gun, son of a stunna, yep! Most of the beats are cool, but there where a couple of beats I didn't feel ("Cash Money Millionaires") and Mannie Fresh is a bit annoying when he raps. BUT, this is a tight disc! My favorites are: The Heat ("Dressed in all black and my gun the same color.."), Hoes and This Is The Carter. Lil Wayne, keep doing your thang!! | | Lil Wayne Lights Out CD (2000)
Tha Carter CD music
$10.79 Lil Wayne may still be a youngster on his second album, Lights Out, but he shows substantial growth, dropping serious lyrics over some of Mannie Fresh's wildest production to date. More than anything, the serious tone and the wild beats come as somewhat of a surprise. Up until this point, the Cash Money camp had churned out a staggering number of releases during the late '90s. These releases were anything but serious or wild, instead prototypically Dirty South with their big, bass-heavy bounce beats and brash, bling-bling boastful banter. Lights Out retains plenty of this but is notably ambitious. Wayne is out to prove himself as more than a teen phenomenon, showcasing a socially conscious side largely absent on his debut, and Fresh is out to prove himself as a versatile producer, crafting a sonically adventurous sound denser than his past work. This ambition is somewhat fascinating, particularly for anyone who has followed Cash Money's evolution to here; however, it's also a bit overreaching. ...
| | B G Life After Cash Money CD (2004)
Tha Carter music CDs
$14.25 B.G.'s rapping skills made serious revenue for the legendary Cash Money label before he was a teenager (and before there was much of a Cash Money label of which to speak). On 2004's LIFE AFTER CASH MONEY, B.G. sounds like someone who's moved beyond his origins, with easy vocals gliding over magnificent Dirty South beats. Although he makes it clear that he's no longer affiliated with the record company with which he was practically synonymous in the 1990s (this is his second record for Koch Records), B.G. still brandishes a hard-edged style that doesn't ...

| | Lloyd Banks Hunger For More CD (2004)
Tha Carter album
$10.45 Banks makes his hotly anticipated debut with THE HUNGER FOR MORE, an album whose title sums up the tough, yet introspective artist, a ravenous rapper who devours words hungrily. The world is spinning around nonstop in Banks's brain, and there is clearly not enough time for it all to get out. However, in the course of THE HUNGER FOR MORE, he tackles everything from the simple topics of love and sex and life on the streets to problems ...

| | Wynonie Harris Lovin' Machine CD (2002)
Tha Carter music CDs
$14.75 This is a companion disc to Ace's earlier compilation, Women, Whiskey and Fish Tails, and likewise hones in on his 1950s output for King Records, the 26 tracks hailing from 1951-1957. Though the early part of that stretch found him continuing to land some R&B smashes with "Lovin' Machine" and his cover of Hank Penny's "Bloodshot Eyes" (both included on the disc), generally it marked the point at which he began his absence from the charts. Actually there's not much difference between this body of work and his salad days, other than the lack of many obvious hits from the git-go like "Good Rockin' Tonight." Harris' problem was that his brand of jump blues-cum-R&B had itself passed its peak, though he continued to be one of its best practitioners. This isn't recommended for those who just want one or two Harris anthologies; his most well-known sides from the late '40s, like "Good Rockin' Tonight," are not represented, and Rhino's Bloodshot Eyes best-of collection ...

| | Sylvia Telles Voice I Love CD (2006)
Tha Carter songs
$14.05 It doesn't say so anywhere on the packaging, but this 24-track compilation consists of all of the tracks that appeared on the two mid-'60s LPs by Sylvia Telles that were most known to the English-speaking audience. These were the title-explanatory Sylvia Telles Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim and The Face I Love; on the latter, just one of the songs was co-written by Jobim, and all but one of the tunes was performed in English. The 12 tracks from The Face I Love comprise the first half of Voice I Love, and are delivered by Telles with an only faintly detectable accent and confident phrasing. While a few of the songs are covers of American popular standards (Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II's "It Might As Well Be Spring," George Gershwin & Ira Gershwin's "If Not for Me," and "Baubles, Bangles and Beads"), in the main she stuck to English translations of Brazilian songs, though "Balanco Zona Sul" is sung in the original Portuguese. Marcos Valle co-wrote three of the numbers with Paulo Sérgio, and these -- especially "The Face I Love" and "Surfin' in Rio" -- are highlights, with a somewhat sassier, more uninhibited feel than much of the rest of the album.
The last half of the CD consists of the 12 songs from Sylvia Telles Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim, recorded at a time when Jobim was far more famous in the northern hemisphere than he'd been when Telles first cut his material in the mid-'50s. As with The Face I Love, indications are that perhaps Telles was eyeing the international market as well, since seven of the twelve songs were sung in English (though the remainder were sung in Portuguese). Regardless of what tongue she's using, these numbers were sumptuously produced mid-'60s bossa nova, delivered well whether in her native language or in English. In fact, the sumptuousness borders on the lush at times, though of course bossa nova without the sentiment would be rather like eating spaghetti without the sauce. "How Insensitive" is probably the best-known song of the batch, with "Dreamer" rating as the grandest arrangement, and "Eu Preciso de Voce" (with a skipping beat reminiscent of Hollywood musicals) and ...
