Blind Lemon Jefferson was a street singer with a wide and varied repertoire, although he is best known for his straight-ahead blues pieces like the title track here, "Black Snake Moan." As this sampler of Jefferson's 1920s and 1930s 78s from Snapper Records shows, however, he was equally at home doing hillbilly spirituals ("He Arose from the Dead") and folk-blues ("See That My Grave Is Kept Clean"), and he also had a fine slide sound ("Jack O'Diamond Blues"). Immensely popular, Jefferson's 78s were poorly pressed and frequently played, so these tracks have a good deal of surface hiss, which may be bothersome to some listeners. ~ Steve Leggett

Black Snake Moan
$6.49 Following the platinum success of SLOWHAND, BACKLESS continued Eric Clapton's transformation into a singer/songwriter with better-than-average chops after a lifetime of guitar godhood. Eschewing the star-studded cameos of NO REASON TO CRY, Clapton instead relied on his core group of the '70s: George Terry, Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, Dick Simms and Marcy Levy. Levy in particular, proved her worth by co-writing the slide-drenched "Roll It" with Slowhand. Her passionate testifying on this as well as her sparkling harmonies on the Don Williams-influenced "Promises" made up for fellow back-up singer Yvonne Elliman's departure following SLOWHAND's release.
Clapton's choice of composers to cover included Dylan ("Walk Out In The Rain," "If I Don't Be There By Morning"), J.J. Cale ("I'll Make Love To You Anytime") and Okie Danny Flowers ("Tulsa Time"). In addition, ...
| | Ativin Summing The Approach CD (1999)
Black Snake Moan
$9.59 Some eight years since Slint's Spiderland forever altered the indie-rock landscape, it's arguable that any valid derivations can still be fashioned from its blueprints. To be sure, Ativin's members never denied Slint's influence on their music. But over the course of an EP, a single and a full-length album, Ativin moved well beyond the pummelling soft-to-loud transitions of Slint and toward a highly distinctive blend of treated, interlocked guitar grooves, firm rhythmic manuevers and electronically-enhanced atmospheres.
All of these elements are served at precisely the right temperature on Summing The Approach, a posthumous four-song EP recorded by Steve Albini that serves as a satisfying final chapter to the Ativin novella. Summing does not abandon the calling cards of 1998's dreamy German Water.
But it does mark a return to Ativin's more awkward side, especially on "Cy," ...

| | Edge: David Axelrod At Capitol Records 1966-1971 CD (2005)
Black Snake Moan
$11.89 EMI in Great Britain reissued David Axelrod's three albums for Capitol in fine editions on both vinyl and CD at the end of the 1990s. Fantasy issued its own retrospective, The Axelrod Chronicles, in 2000. Blue Note is finally getting its act together here by taking a look at the work Axelrod did as both a producer and artist with Capitol from 1966-1970. The Edge is not perfect, but for 17 tracks it does give a halfway decent look at the wide range of projects and artists Axe worked with, despite the album's aesthetic inconsistency. Some of the most compelling of these are the tracks with actor David McCallum on vocals -- who played Robert Vaughn's sidekick Ilya Kuryakin in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. -- Axelrod produced four albums for him. "House of Mirrors," is a way tripped-out psychedelic piece ...

| | Uri Caine Rio CD (2001) (Import)
Black Snake Moan
$18.15 During the late '90s through 2001, pianist/composer Uri Caine found a home with the Germany-based Winter & Winter record label. After a string of largely successful third stream-type interpretations and reinventions of classical composers -- Gustav Mahler, Johann Sebastian Bach, and others -- and one conventional jazz piano trio outing, Caine launched 2002 with three concurrent yet vastly dissimilar releases. Here, the artist presents the listener with a musical account of his travels in Rio de Janeiro, as he enlists local percussionists and vocalists to augment his base rhythm section. Winter & Winter printed the liners, track listings, personnel, and incidentals in Portuguese. Some of these works were recorded in a parking lot and other venues, and Caine and the production team judiciously left many of the background noises and sounds of the street intact. The pianist utilizes Fender Rhodes electric piano and acoustic piano throughout. However, the primary thrust of this recording resides within the often buoyantly executed rhythms and bustling frameworks, where Caine constructs jazzy motifs atop a series of samba and funk grooves, rap, and more. With this effort, Caine seemingly derives inspiration from the rhythmic structures while melding his thematic inventions into the percussionists' temporal planes. Nonetheless, ...
| | Walter Trout & The Radicals Relentless CD (2003) (Import) SACD Hybrid; Germany
Black Snake Moan
$14.95 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Another in a series of undiluted blues-rock offerings from guitarist Walter Trout, Relentless, his 11th disc since 1990, doesn't offer any surprises. Released in conjunction with a DVD, the album was recorded live in the Netherlands club The Paradiso on a single day with little post-production sweetening or audience intervention. This results in a successful balance between ...

| | Robb Appleton Wood CD (2008) (Import)
Black Snake Moan
$18.55 Robb originally hails from Southend-on-Sea - the land of Dr Feelgood, The Kursaal Flyers, Eddie and The Hot Rods, to name a few. It was these influences (and missing the last bus home from the sea front) that prompted him to buy his first harmonica. He moved to Cambridge as a teenager after completing a drama course, to take theatre to prisons and schools. Never letting go of his musical aspirations, Robb developed his harmonica playing beyond his Blues roots to create his own, very unique sound. Harmonica is an instrument that he specializes on and uses it for session work and composing/recording. He also writes and records for music library, and is passionate about films/film music and photography. At the moment Robb is working on projects recording harmonica with natural and electronic sounds with vocals. He has just completed writing and recording his first solo album in a colourful career that has included collaborations with such other fine musicians as Rick Fenn (guitarist with 10CC), Robyn Hitchcock (The Soft Boys), Dr Robert (The Blow Monkeys) and many others.‘The Wood’ “This is a brilliant and ...
