There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
This powerful album comes alive in DTS 5.1 Surround sound for DVD-Video players, also three bonus tracks not found on the domestic stereo release and two music videos, mixed in DTS 5.1 sound.

Very good album, but where's the bass? I picked this up on DVD-a on a recommendation on my newsgroup. I was immediately impressed with the opening track (I'm a big Rush / Dream Theater / Fates Warning fan). The surround mix isn't particularly aggressive, which can be a good thing. It offers the proper ambience without going insane with channel bouncing.
However, where's the bass? I mean there is hardly any .1 information at all. My sub is nearly dead playing this DVD-a. I realize that not every DVD-a can be mixed like Steely Dan's latest, but this mix definitely subtracts a star from an otherwise worthy musical performance. AWESOME!!! This is a MUST have for PT collectors. The bouns tracks alone are well worth it even though there are only three of them. It is a beautiful mixture of sounds that just blows you away. You really havent heard the album unless you have heard it in DTS format its truely amazing.

Increible!!! In Absentia
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming ...

In Absentia
$23.69 Of all the bands to emerge from the early `90s grunge explosion, Pearl Jam was both the longest-lived and most consistently interesting. After several albums that found the group taking an increasingly experimental direction, the Seattle quintet returned to its straight-ahead hard rock roots with 2006's self-titled effort. In 2009 however, Pearl Jam surprised fans again with an album containing some of the unit's catchiest, poppiest songs ever. According to lead vocalist Eddie Vedder, most of the new material was written prior to recording, which was a significant departure from the group's usual in-studio jamming method of composition. The result is one of the unit's most focused and accessible works ...

While the Moodies were never exactly a rocker's delight, SEVENTH SOJOURN, the seventh recording with the post-Denny Laine lineup, is perhaps their most ballad-heavy album. Ironically, the album's biggest hit, which would become one of the group's signature songs, was the uncharacteristically uptempo "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band." Elsewhere, ...
