After a five-year hiatus from recording, during which time he worked with his film production company, George Harrision returned to the studio in 1987 and cut the Jeff Lynne-produced CLOUD NINE. Harrison and Lynne made for a perfect match, as this album proved to be a comeback for the reclusive ex-Beatle. Joined by an all-star band that included Eric Clapton, Elton John, and Ringo Starr, Harrison put together a collection that includes sitar-tinged reminiscences of his former musical life ("When We Were Fab"), slinky psychedelia (the title track), and an obscure R&B tune that Harrison took to the top of the charts ("Got My Mind Set on You"). Although Harrison used the twangy irresistibility of "Devil's Radio" to take a swipe at gossip, he contrasted it with the bright-eyed optimism of "This Is Love." After deciding not to tour, George Harrison joined Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison in the Traveling Wilburys the following year.

The Best Late 80s Former Beatle's Album Without question Cloud Nine could have used less Jeff Lynne influence. However these recording sessions brought the Traveling Wilburys together. Lynne corrupts a few tracks but is less evident on Just For Today, Cloud 9 and Someplace Else. Clapton, Sir Elton, Ringo and the rest make for a solid backing team on this classically over produced late 80s CD (At least Phil Collins is absent). Listen at least twice before giving up on it and avoid comparing this with his early stuff...It's not the same kinda thing. (This was my first CD) Submitted by Craig P. | | George Harrison All Things Must Pass CDs (1970) 30th Anniversary Edt; Remastered
Cloud Nine
$19.09 Though George Harrison's solo albums for most of the 1970s and early '80s were uneven, often slapdash affairs, 1970's ALL THINGS MUST PASS is a brilliant piece of work. Produced by Phil Spector, whose expansive, majestic arrangements and sonic flourishes suit Harrison's songs perfectly, ALL THINGS MUST PASS eclipses everything the other Beatles recorded at the time (excepting John Lennon's PLASTIC ONO BAND). This sprawling double record gives the impression of Harrison being uncorked and pouring forth all of the songs and ideas edged out by Lennon and McCartney during the Beatles years.
The title and the melancholic black and white cover photo match the mood of the music, which brims with an armchair wisdom, and the weary, disillusioned air that permeated the early '70s in the counter-cultural wake. Yet the album also boasts an abiding sense of spirituality and tenacious optimism, as on the lullaby-like hit single "My Sweet Lord" and "Isn't It a Pity," a compassionate study of human suffering. "What Is Life" and "Awaiting on You All" continue these themes, but Spector's bright pop polish lends a counterweight, ...

Cloud Nine
$14.39 One of George Harrison's finest 1970s recordings, his '79 self-titled album is most notable for the inclusion of "Not Guilty," a song originally intended for the Beatles' WHITE ALBUM. Here, in its breezy, keyboard-driven form, the tune sets the laid-back tone of the album, a mood continued by "Here Comes the Moon," a reflective riff on his signature tune "Here Comes the Sun." Steve Winwood's presence is clearly felt throughout much of the record, particularly in his Moog and harmonium work, while Eric Clapton's guitar ushers in the proceedings on the ...
| | George Harrison Somewhere In England CD (1981) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Cloud Nine
$14.39 In the tradition of ABBEY ROAD's "Something," Harrison includes two fluid, slower numbers: "Writing's on the Wall" and the love song "Life Itself." The record's highlight, however, is the John Lennon tribute "All Those Years Ago." The shiny pop pulse nicely balances the sense of longing and loss at the song's core, and contributions from Ringo Starr, Paul and Linda McCartney, and George Martin make it something of a collective statement from a group of old friends. Along with his self-titled album, this is one of Harrison's strongest releases.
Falling squarely between the soulful, exploratory ...
| | George Harrison Thirty-Three & 1/3 CD (1976) Bonus Tracks
Cloud Nine
$15.65 Forsaking the introspective, spiritual themes of many of his earlier recordings, THIRTY THREE & 1/3 was perhaps Harrison's finest album since his landmark debut, ALL THINGS MUST PASS. Released in 1976, THIRTY THREE & 1/3 spawned several hit singles, including "This Song" (an upbeat rocker featuring some jaunty organ playing by Billy Preston and a spoken word cameo from Monty Python's Eric Idle) and "Crackerbox ...
