 Fine Performances with Mediocre Transfers
Naxos's historic reissue series is to be applauded for bringing classic recordings to the public at fair prices. The frustration comes from the inconsistency of their mastering. Listen to Ward Marston's marvelous work on their operas and you'll hear the difference. These transfers, along with many others (the dreadful Beecham/Delius set comes to mind) have questionable equalization and too much filtering. But Furtwangler's performances are certainly worth owning. Marston can't do everything for Naxos, but there's more on these 78s than comes through in these dubs. Naxos, you can do better, so keep on trying!
