Purchase Live CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Gary Burton Quartet Live CD (2009)
Live album
$15.65 Vibraphonist Gary Burton's classic quartet of the late `60s, consisting of Burton and guitarist Larry Coryell (later, Pat Metheny), bassist Steve Swallow, and drummer Roy Haynes, are often credited with laying the groundwork for the aggressive jazz-rock fusions of the `70s. Nearly four decades on from their, initial, pioneering efforts, original quartet members and jazz legends Burton, Metheny, and Swallow, along with newcomer drummer Antonio Sanchez, have assembled for QUARTET LIVE!, an 11-song live document recorded at Yoshi's Jazz Club in Oakland, California. Revisiting Burton (and Metheny) penned originals as well as material by Duke Ellington and Chick Corea, the group reaches new virtuosic heights, offering a fresh, modern slant on the fusion genre.
Personnel: Gary Burton (vibraphone); Pat Metheny (guitar, guitars); Steve Swallow (electric bass, bass guitar); Antonio Sanchez (drums).
| | Alexander Zonjic Doin' The D CD (2009)
Live CD music
$15.18 It isn't hard to see why some jazz listeners might approach DOIN' THE D with trepidation. Flutist Alexander Zonjic is a smooth jazz artist, and one of the musicians featured on this 2009 release is the saxophonist so many jazz musicians love to hate: Kenny G. However, the album's title song boasts Brian Bromberg on acoustic bass--and keyboardist Jeff Lorber co-produced many of the tracks in addition to helping with the composing, arranging, and engineering. Lorber's presence is definitely a plus, and groove-oriented tunes like "Tourista," "Good as Goldie," and "Tongue Twister" (all of which Lorber composed and co-produced with Zonjic) balance commercial and artistic considerations. As a flutist, Zonjic has a long history of fluctuating between the funkiness of Herbie Mann and Hubert Laws on one hand and the blandness that has often plagued Tim Weisberg on the other. Lorber seems to bring out a bit more of the Mann/Laws side of things on the tunes that he contributes to. And for all its slick, glossy commercialism, DOIN' THE D still has more integrity than many of the ...
| | Miles Davis Miles CD (1955)
Live music CDs
$8.85 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1982, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
THE NEW MILES DAVIS QUINTET made its first visit to the recording studios on November 16, 1955. By October 26, 1956, when they made their last session for Prestige, Miles had signed with recording giant Columbia, had the most influential band in all of jazz (which would spawn the most charismatic musician of the 1960s), and was well on his way towards international stardom.
Listen to THE MUSINGS OF MILES, an earlier quartet with bassist Oscar Pettiford, then listen to the difference bassist Paul Chambers and tenor saxophonist John Coltrane make. Philly Joe Jones' dancing hi-hat reverie introduces "How Am I To Know," and the band takes it a galloping tempo. The youthful bassist pushes the music into more modern directions with his solid time, driving beat, ringing tone and uncanny sense of melodic counterpoint. He opens the music right up, and his rhythmic flexibility frees up Philly Joe to play ahead of the beat and instigate an insistent polyrhythmic dialogue.
From the finger snappin' opening groove of Benny Golson's "Stablemates," it's clear that this rhythm section just swings harder (and in more different styles) then anyone this side of Basie's All-Americans or the drummer-led bands of Art Blakey and Max Roach. In Red Garland, the trumpeter found a pianist who understood his idea about touch, voicings and space, and was able to orchestrate in the lush, expansive style Miles favored. (Listen to his discreetly rocking, two-handed intro to "Just Squeeze Me," or his rhapsodic responses to Miles' little boyish Harmon mute on "There Is No Greater Love.")
And John Coltrane...in whose restless, searching, turbulent lines Miles found his perfect foil (much as the trumpeter's taciturn, introspective ...
| | Grover Washington, Jr A Secret Place CD (1976) Remastered; Digipak
Live songs
$9.65 A SECRET PLACE was produced by Creed Taylor and issued on his Kudu imprint, while the versatile David Matthews arranged the horn section. This lineup may not be surprising, but the scope of the recording is. Washington could have gone the easy route and followed up his R&B chart success with a series of uptempo, rousing tracks that leaned heavier on funk--in the style of the title tracks of both his previous albums, 1974's MISTER MAGIC and 1975's FEEL SO GOOD. But he went in a different direction, at least partially. The bottom line on A SECRET PLACE is that while the set did well commercially, it got nowhere near the critical praise of its predecessors. That's a shame, because it is a truly fine album whose grooves and pleasures stand the test of time easily.
Personnel: Grover Washington Jr. (soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Eric Gale (guitar); Gerry Niewood (alto saxophone); John Gatchell (trumpet); ...
