Along with Korn's 1994 self-titled debut album, the Deftones' 1995 debut, ADRENALINE, helped put California's new rage-filled metal movement on the map, subsequently inspiring countless other bands. Vocalist Chino Moreno was one of the first alternative/metal singers to specialize in the sing/scream style that would become prevalent by the late '90s, while guitarist Stephen Carpenter specialized in repetitive, mammoth guitar riffs that were comparable to both Black Sabbath and Soundgarden. While ADRENALINE wasn't a big hit right off the bat, constant touring over a period of several years helped set up the Deftones' eventual breakthrough success with the group's sophomore effort, AROUND THE FUR, two years later.
ADRENALINE proves to be a very consistent debut. Although the band would focus and perfect its sound even more on future releases, all of the major ingredients were already evident. The lead-off track, "Bored," remains one of the band's best anthems (and a concert favorite), while there are many other standouts throughout ("Root," "Minus Blindfold," "7 Words," "Birthmark," etc.). SSSSH is one of Ten Years After's best studio albums, although like its predecessor, "Stonedhenge" (albeit to a lesser degree), it's something of a period piece. It's not a straight blues album, by any means; "If You Should Love Me," for example, is an attractively watery re-write of the Beatles' "Hey Jude," while the opening "Bad Scene" is (unsurprisingly) a cautionary piece of acid rock, heavy on the fuzz guitar and sound efffects.
"The Stomp," however, is another one of leader Alvin Lee's thinly veiled tributes to John Lee Hooker (and a nice showcase for organist Chick Churchill). The album's centerpiece is a salacious version of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little School Girl" featuring some pretty hot soloing by Lee as well as re-written lyrics that got the track banned on radio in its day. Don't miss Lee's hilariously incoherent liner notes, which seem to exhibit the influence of certain controlled substances.

Aficionados of vintage (i.e., early 1980s) synth-pop are blessed with a bounty in the form of the four-disc Yaz box set, IN YOUR ROOM. The duo featured original Depeche Mode member Vince Clarke and soulful singer Alison Moyet, and turned out some of the gutsiest electronic pop of the era. In addition to both of the group's original albums, IN YOUR ROOM features a wealth of remixes and B-sides, as well as a DVD containing live footage from the BBC, videos, and a short film. Though Clarke and Moyet would go on to other successes--Erasure and a solo career, respectively--Yaz's work made for some of the brightest moments in '80s British pop, and this set handsomely documents the pair's brief-but-brilliant career.
The band, also known as Yazoo in the U.K., are Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet. They were formed in 1982 when the founding member of Depeche Mode replied to an ad placed by Moyet in the Melody Maker looking for 'rootsy blues musicians.' For the first time ever, Yaz's only 2 albums have been re-mastered and packaged together in this 4 disc deluxe box set. Also included are a CD of B-sides and remixes, and a DVD with a short film including new Clarke and Moyet and exclusive archival footage, promo videos, and Yazoo at the BBC in 1982 and 1983 on Top of the Pops, Cheggers Plays Pop, and Saturday Live.
