Here's the ultimate Son House collection. It contains all of his Paramount recordings. Decent transfers of these normally battered beyond belief masters make for easier listening than normal, followed by the legendary John Lomax Library of Congress recordings from 1941 and 1942, including the unissued test pressing of "Walkin' Blues." This is Son at his most intense and finer Delta blues recordings next to Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson would be very hard to find. Worth it just to hear "Walkin' Blues" alone with Willie Brown and Charlie Patton whooping it up in the background, true juke joint music at its best. File under essential. ~ Cub Koda
The Complete Blues on Snapper is another respectable reissue series coming on the heels of 2003's PBS special Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues. Son House' Delta Blues highlights 20 exemplary performances recorded between May 28, 1930, through July 17, 1942, including "Preachin' the Blues," "Levee Camp Blues," "My Black Mama," and "Dry Spell Blues." Collectors should note that these tracks have been cleaned up to the point where the high end is flattened out and a bit muddy, but still, this is revelatory primeval material recommended to anyone not familiar with one of the pioneering Delta blues guitarists. The series is nicely packaged in a digipack with a 12-page booklet. ~ Al Campbell
20 formative tracks from the king of Delta blues, including "Preachin' The Blues", "Walking Blues" and "The Pony Blues".
Includes liner notes by Ken Romanowski.

Delta Blues album
$10.59 All songs written by Junior Wells except "It Hurts Me Too" (Hudson Whittaker) and "I'll Take Care Of You" (Brook Brenton).
Recorded on Halloween night in 1979, this pairs up Wells and Guy in a fashion that hasn't been heard since Hoodoo Man Blues, their first, and best collaboration. Solid backing by the Philip Guy band (Buddy's brother) makes this album a rare treat. ~ Cub Koda

| | Magic Sam West Side Soul CD (1967)
Delta Blues CD music
$9.85 Although singer/guitarist Magic Sam learned from the Chicago blues greats, his 1967 debut album, WEST SIDE SOUL, pretty much marks the dividing line between the classic Chicago style and what we know as contemporary electric blues today. His serpentine, tremolo-laden guitar style, somewhat akin to what his Cobra labelmate ...
| | Magic Sam Black Magic CDs (1968)
Delta Blues music CDs
$9.85 This album's color cover photo is an action shot, showing Magic Sam in the process of choking and bending his strings, a good hike up the fretboard. It isn't clear exactly what he is playing from the picture, although that certainly didn't stop dozens of pimply hippie guitar players from trying to figure it out. In the meantime, the record goes on and the first soloist out of the gate is Eddie Shaw, playing tenor sax. He is blowing over the top of an R&B riff that, although not out of the syntax of Chicago blues, would also have been quite fitting on a Wilson Pickett record. It is unfortunate that Magic Sam's recording career came to such an abrupt end, as he was one of the best artists working in the musical area between the urban blues tradition and newly developing soul music forms. This fusion was on the minds of many blues artists during the late '60s, and not just because it was aesthetically conceivable. It was also a matter of commerce, as audiences -- particularly black audiences -- didn't want to hear any blues that sounded too much like something their parents might have listened to. The harmonica player Junior Wells was another one who decided to get a bit of James Brown into his act, not always with great results. What listeners have here, on the other hand, is frankly delicious, the results of the surplus of talent Magic Sam possessed, a triple threat as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Yet with all this talent, the label should also get some credit. This period of the Delmark discography set a high standard for blues recordings, the sound quality and tight interplay among the musicians every bit the equal of the classic ...

| | Otis Rush Cold Day In Hell CD (1976)
Delta Blues CD music
$12.75 Two previously unreleased tracks have been added to this re-release.
COLD DAY IN HELL is one of the standouts from Otis Rush's 1970s catalogue. Rush's anguished vocals, piercing guitar leads, and overall gutsy attack are in full effect here on galloping rockers ("Cut You a Loose") and loping groovers ("Mean Old World") alike. Rush specializes in slow-burn down-tempo numbers--"You're Breaking My Heart," "Society Woman," and the wiry title track fall into this category, and each of these tracks give the Chicago axe-master plenty of room to stretch out on the fretboard.
Unlike a lot of the post-'60s bluesmen, Rush never softened or commercialized his sound, and COLD DAY IN HELL upholds the artist's rough and raw ethos. His searing guitar work (which seems inseparable from his chunky amplifier tone) cuts a trail through the middle of these songs and is as appropriate on wrenching slow blues as it is on "Motoring Along," a sprightly, jazz-influenced instrumental. An alternate take of "You're Breaking My Heart" and the previously unissued "Part Time Love" are icing ...
| | Magic Slim Snakebite CD (2000)
Delta Blues music CDs
$13.49 Snakebite is the best and most cohesive Magic Slim album to date, where all the things he does best come together in one place. Expertly produced by Dick Shurman, this spotlights all the groove that makes Slim a bandstand favorite, with none of the rough edges that mar his other studio or live efforts. The songs are top-notch (seven of the 11 tunes here are Slim originals), and this version of the Teardrops -- Nick Holt on bass, Allen Kirk on drums, and Michael Dotson on second guitar -- lay a greasy pocket down behind their leader that fits perfectly. Slim's vocals are spot-on, and his guitar work is his most focused yet. A truly inspired session, this is the perfect introduction ...
| | Superblues: All-Time Classic Blues Hits, Vol. 1 CD (1990)
Delta Blues songs
$8.39 The three-volume Superblues series may not have enough rare/unusual items for the collector, or enough of a solid connecting thread for the more general listener. For those who just want a varied assortment of top-notch blues (mostly from the '50s and '60s) in their collection, though, they're good deals. They cover a pretty wide territory of both top blues stars and lesser-known singers, drawn more from urbane R&B- and jump blues-influenced cuts than most similar compilations. They also have generous playing times, and offer enough liner notes to provide a context for non-experts. ...
