| | Opeth Ghost Reveries CD (2005)
Neighborhood Music
$14.05 New label, new band member, same brilliant Opeth. The most obvious change from their previous two releases, DELIVERANCE (2002) and DAMNATION (2003), is the permanent addition of previous touring keyboard player Per Wiberg. His organ work, specifically, creates new textures only hinted at on previous releases. While many of Opeth's peers have ...

| | Jay-Z The Blueprint 3 CD (2009)
Neighborhood Music
$16.05 On THE BLUEPRINT 3, still unretired Jay-Z announces "the only rapper to rewrite history without a pen." It's a standard Jigga boast, but the Brooklyn icon has earned the bragging by backing it up, particularly on his gold-label, top-shelf BLUEPRINT series. Ever-ready for battle, Jay-Z takes on autotune, crossover radio, and many other hip-hop concerns with the gloriously jagged rap elan for which he's become known.
When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The first volume saw Jay-Z as vital as he'd ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a few years of commercial success. THE BLUEPRINT 2 took a different tack, with guest shots to compliment his sinuous flows. BLUEPRINT 3 is somewhere between the two, closer to the vitality and energy of the original but not without the crossover bids and guest features of the latter. Kanye West is in the producer's chair for seven tracks, and it's clear he was reaching for the same energy level as the original. "What We Talkin' About" begins the album with a wave of surging, oppressive synth, while Jay-Z enumerates (with an intriguing lack of detail) what he's said and what's been said about him, ending with a nod not to the past but the future (and Barack Obama). There's plenty more lyrical violence to come, but most of the targets are much safer than they were eight years earlier (i.e. opening single and smash hit "D.O.A. [Death of Auto Tune]" (railing against the oft-reviled '00s vocal-tweaking phenomenon is not quite as "politically incorrect" as Jay claims through song). Simply put, the production's big-name solid, the rhyming on poing, as Jay-Z becomes more content with his dominance ...

| | Tracy Byrd I'm From The Country CD (1998)
Neighborhood Music
$6.29 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Listening to I'M FROM THE COUNTRY is like spending the night in a Texas honky-tonk--it's a mix of uptempo, boot-scootin' tracks and slow dance numbers, all highlighting Byrd's warm, resonant voice. He switches easily from pleading ballads like "I Want to Feel That Way Again" to playful tracks like "Walkin' The Line," in which a misbehaving man swears that all he needs to make him shape up is a good woman's love. Highlights include "I Still Love the Nightlife," about a man who enjoys a different kind of nighttime activity now that he's settled down, and "On Again, Off Again," a character study of a man who refuses to commit.
The standout is "Back to Texas," in which the Texan narrator chases his girl to Oklahoma and declares he won't return without her. It's got a killer chorus, and Byrd gives a swooningly romantic performance. While Byrd's overall choice of material shows a new maturity, he does include one flat-out ditty: "I'm From the Country," a "we're proud to be hillbillies" anthem complete with goofy backup chorus. But when Byrd starts extolling the virtues of sawed-off shotguns, coonskin caps and sleeping in the hay, you ...

| | Melaphyre Ugliness CD (2006)
Neighborhood Music
$10.65 BIOGRAPHY: MELAPHYREMelaphyre, the premiere artist from Ayo Inc./Fight For Us!!, started giving the world his perceptions of hip hop after listening to a Criminal Minded mix tape in mid to late 1986. Though Mela started rhyming a few years prior, it wasn’t until then that the rap entrepreneur gained focus on what was to be his ultimate calling. KRS-1 seemingly spoke to Mela on songs like “9mm” and “Poetry.” Ironically, Mela would take stage with the aforementioned M.C. and perform in three cities with his poetic mentor. Mela, who was one-fifth of the cult legend group Survivalist, brings his second solo session, “Ugliness,” to the listener. Like the classic Criminal Minded, “Ugliness” sets to touch on the ills of everything happening in society. The New Orleans native has seen things of a corrupt nature happen through his eyes, from the gentrification of a community to the crumbling of his historic city hit by natural causes (Katrina). With a knack for never holding his tongue on issues, Mela calls out pseudo gangstas, hypocrite music execs, and civic leaders. Mela's words, which are sometimes welcomed yet resented at the same time in hip hop’s current fickle society, hit home with statements like "I'm speaking from a global perspective. If you ain’t for the upliftment of people on the whole and your primary objective is exploiting a community you were once a part of, then I got no love for you period.” This sentiment, which is typically shared by the educated poor, is what has endeared Mela to fans worldwide in the struggle. This genuine quality is exuded through an unexplainable energy once you cross paths with the M.C. known as Melaphyre. The son of a math professor/educator and musician, Mela measures up ...
