Probably the best studio album by Eric Burdon and the Animals (or the New Animals, as they were occasionally known, to demarcate them from the original Alan Price/Chas Chandler line-up). 1968's THE TWAIN SHALL MEET is gentle yet powerful R&B-laced psychedelic pop as good as anything that was being made in Burdon's adopted hometown of San Francisco that year.

The opening "Monterey" is an engaging rewrite of the previous year's hit "San Franciscan Nights," and the album's other hit single, "Sky Pilot," is one of Burdon's best performances ever. The remaining six tracks take their time to unfold, but there's no aimless jamming or time-wasting repetition; every song is exactly as long as it needs to be. While many denigrate this era of Burdon's career in favor of what had come before, THE TWAIN SHALL MEET shows that Burdon made some powerful, lasting music in this period.

Restored & remastered 2004 reissue of 1968 album is packaged in a digipak & features 13 tracks including 5 bonus tracks, 'Sky Pilot, Part 1' (Single Version), 'Sky Pilot, Part 2' (Single Version), 'Monterey' (Single Version), 'Anything' (Single Version), & 'It's All Meat' (Single Version). Repertoire.

This German import version contains five bonus tracks.

You simply cannot find any other more consistent album of Eric Burdon & The New Animals.So..if you don't like this leave them better alone. G.

5 stars my first EB & A album
1968 Freshman or jr in high school, bought it to hear "Monterey" on my first set of headphones listening thru a dual turntable on a my dads tube amp/turner, you haven't heard track separation until you hear "Sky Pilot" on vinyl. I had just about everyone of his lps but lost them in a move (actually a divorce) I hope someone is enjoying them. get this one if you want some classic EB.
