Clannad has traversed the timeline of Irish pop music, from its folk and traditional roots to modern synthesized music. The '80s and '90s saw the rise of Irish rock supergroups (most notably U2) and more subtle ambient music artists like Clannad and Clannad's former bandmate, Enya. On BANBA, we hear Clannad's version of what could be broadly termed Irish pop music. Elements of Irish culture and tradition are implicit in the music, singing style, and lyrics.
Three of the songs, "Na Laethe Bhi," "Banba Oir," and "Caide Sin Do'N Te Sin" are sung in Irish and revolve around Irish themes, the pop elements emerging from the structure of the music which consists of the standard verse, chorus, bridge format. There's also a real emphasis on delivering a hook here. Generally mellow and introspective, BANBA's highlights include the haunting "I Will Find You," and the optimistic, guitar based "The Other Side."
Deluxe edition, digitally remastered from the original tapes, reissue of 1994 album features 12 tracks including 1 bonus chill-out remix track, 'I Will Find You' (Afterlife Mix). Includes 12-page booklet with new sleeve notes & rare photos. BMG. 2004.
Recorded at The Mill Studios, Berkshire, England and Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland.
Q (6/93, p.94) - 3 Stars - Good - "...More of the same here from Clannad...the ideal accompaniment to any serious bout of eco-friendly navel-contemplation....Banba, you may not be amazed to know, means Ireland..." Musician (8/93, p.90) - "...Clannad continues to expand its sound, clearing space for jazzy extrapolations, hearkening back to folk roots, and uncorking some wonderfully catchy choruses..."
Haunting and Poetic This is I think Clannad's best. Their style is very unique, and this album is a crowning effort. A perfect mix of the mystical Celtic heritage with the personal warmth of the Gaelic heart. No lover of Clannad, Enya, Altan or any good Celtic group should be without this.
