George Duke is regarded as one of the greatest jazz keyboard players of all time. Almost all of his albums have been issued on CD, the one blatant exception is his work for MPS Records in the mid-70's. He put out three albums for MPS. In 1982 George himself hand selected what he considered to be the best tracks from those three albums and issued The 1976 Solo Keyboard Album. First time on CD! Wounded Bird. 2004.
Personnel: George Duke (guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, Wurlitzer organ, mini-Moog synthesizer, drums, tambourine, bells); George Duke (Wurlitzer piano, Hammond b-3 organ, ARP synthesizer). Liner Note Author: George Duke. Recording information: 1976. Not very many of George Duke's recordings are of interest to jazz listeners, since he has spent much of his career as either a funk keyboardist or a pop producer. Despite the title, this album is not a very spontaneous set, for Duke is heard playing piano, various keyboards, guitar, drums, and organ, most of it overdubbed. The seven selections (which include "Mr. McFreeze," "Spock Gets Funky," and "Vulcan Mind Probe") do have their moments of interest, with some good grooves and melodies, and George Duke has long been proud of this particular effort. [Wounded Bird released the album on CD in 2004.] ~ Scott Yanow

| | Gino Vannelli Storm At Sunup CD (1975)
1976 Solo Keyboard Album
$6.85 Though Gino Vannelli's third record didn't contain a big hit single like its predecessor, STORM AT SUNUP was a significant step forward artistically. Combining the Stevie Wonder-esque synth textures of POWERFUL PEOPLE with a complex jazz-rock fusion sound and vocal gymnastics occasionally reminiscent of Tim Buckley, the album finds Vannelli at his most musically ambitious. "Mama Coco" sounds like Weather Report jamming with Jamiroquai singer Jason Kay, while "Love is a Night" makes ELP-style keyboard rock sound like pure love-makin' music. By this point, Vannelli has pared away the often-bizarre edges of his sound and became more mainstream. That's not a bad thing. This album's predecessor, A Pauper in Paradise, seemed to blow up his pretensions to skyscraper size with only the ...

| | Richard Lloyd Radiant Monkey CD (2007)
1976 Solo Keyboard Album
$12.99 Personnel: Richard Lloyd (vocals, guitar, harmonica, bass instrument); Richard Lloyd (guitars, bass guitar); Chris Purdy (drums); Billy Ficca (drums). Audio Mixer: Richard Lloyd . Liner Note Author: Richard Lloyd . Recording information: The Hanbledzoin Factory, New York, NY. As a guitarist, Richard Lloyd is every bit as gifted as Tom Verlaine, his former partner in the band Television, but his history as a songwriter is a good bit more problematic (for every good song in his catalog there's another that clearly needs work), and the fact Lloyd released a mere three studio albums between 1979 and 2001 suggests he's had some issues with the notion of fronting his own band. Thankfully, Lloyd's 2007 album The Radiant Monkey suggests that after all these years he's coming to terms with the demands of a solo career. The Radiant Monkey appeared a relatively swift six years after 2001's The Cover Doesn't Matter, and is largely devoted to tough, chunky rockers that give him plenty of room to show off his skills on the Stratocaster without descending into cheesy showboating. Lloyd demonstrates some soulful, Keith Richards-style picking on "Swipe ...
