Safe Return album
$15.65 "The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22 vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady," "Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." ...
| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Safe Return CD music
$12.79 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his ...

Safe Return songs
$9.69 Pop-vocal legend Johnny Mathis celebrated his 50th anniversary as a recording artist with this 2006 concert recorded in Atlantic City and aired on PBS. Mathis displays the silky-smooth croon that made him a star--and continues to make audiences swoon even at the age of 71--on such signature classics as "Chances Are," "It’s Not for Me to Say," and "Misty." ...
| | Julie London Julie Is Her Name CD (1992) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Digipak; Spain
Safe Return album
$14.45 The actress Julie London more than held her own amidst all the other jazz and pop singers of the mid-'50s. In fact, she was probably more successful in her recording career than as a movie star. "Cry Me A River" is a classic '50s track, right up there with June Christy's "Something Cool" and Chet Baker's "My Funny Valentine." The singer is aided immeasurably by the spare, sympathetic accompaniment of Barney Kessel on guitar. (In some ways, it's just as much his session as hers, which is why it sounds so much like real jazz.) One can imagine her performing this set in a small Hollywood club or even her own living room. She is relaxed and confident, and doesn't try to do too much vocally, which was a smart choice all around. One can only imagine what Marilyn Monroe would have sounded like in similar circumstances.
For a time, Julie London was as famous for her sexy album covers as for her singing. Her debut is her best, a set of fairly basic interpretations of standards in which she is accompanied tastefully by guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Ray Leatherwood. "Cry Me a River" from this album, ...

| | Phonograhic Yearbook: 1907 - Dear Old Golden Rule Days CD (2003)
Safe Return album
$14.29 This is the best volume to date issued in Archeophone's Phonographic Yearbook series. Ironically, Volume One of Archeophone's 1890s series was stated as focusing on the "coon song" phenomenon, but there are better ones included here, in better recordings. There is also at least one "rube" sketch, "Three Rubes Seeing New York," performed by the Peerless trio, a snappy Bert Williams tune, "He's a Cousin of Mine," and even the United States Marine Band dishing up a serving of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag." Persons who desire political correctness in their music should definitely avoid this disc -- even some fairly open-minded listeners may find it a challenge contending with May ...
