| | Sonny Rollins Newk's Time CD Sonny Rollins Discography of CDs
The mid-'50s Blue Note date NEWK'S TIME is a shining star in the Sonny Rollins catalog. The title is derived from Rollins' nickname "Newk," so-called because of his resemblance to baseball player Don Newcomb. It is Rollins' fierce strength as ... Full Descriptionan improviser, along with his assembled quartet of stellar guests, which makes this session so special. Still in his 20s, the saxophonist displays relentless imagination and fire in lengthy solos on standards like Miles Davis' "Tune Up" and Kenny Dorham's rhythmically challenging "Asiatic Raes."
Rollins also continues his penchant for reinterpreting popular tunes, with a delightful reading of "Wonderful, Wonderful!" and "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top" on which he and Philly Joe Jones play a masterful sax/drums duet. Rollins' only composition on the disc is his swinging "Blues For Philly Joe" in honor of the legendary drummer who displays his signature style here. Finally, a lightly swinging stroll through Johnny Mercer's "Namely You" puts the finishing touch on a hard-bop classic.
This is part of Blue Note's RVG series.

Newk's Time music CDs
$9.75 Of all the talented young trumpeters to emerge in the late 1950s, few were gifted with the astonishing technical aptitude of Indianapolis native Freddie Hubbard. Whereas friend, contemporary and erstwhile rival Lee Morgan seemed to reflect the braggadocio of Dizzy Gillespie, Hubbard was more in tune with the supple airborne phrasing of Clifford Brown, which is why drummer Art Blakey brought Hubbard into the Jazz Messengers to supersede Morgan--figuring he would prove a less dominating foil for the emerging talents of tenor saxophonist and musical director, Wayne Shorter.
Not that Hubbard lacked fire. It's just that his harmonic sensibility and chops were so refined, he was able to approximate the fluidity of a saxophonist--which is why the young virtuoso got the nod for special projects by Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. The latter's shadow looms prominently over the proceedings on READY FOR FREDDIE, Hubbard's fourth and most compelling date as a leader: Wayne Shorter is still discovering his own way through Coltrane-ish phrases and harmonic devices, Bernard McKinney's euphonium provides a stark contrasting timbre, while the rhythm section from OLE COLTRANE confers a supple, shifting groove to the proceedings.
Hubbard distinguishes himself both as improviser and composer. The jagged harmonic contrasts ...
| | Horace Silver Cape Verdean Blues CD (1965) Remastered
Newk's Time songs
$9.95 Horace Silver turned to his unique heritage for inspiration on THE CAPE VERDEAN BLUES, a classic mid '60s Blue Note date from the master of funky Latin-tinged jazz. His father hailed from the Cape Verdean islands, and he had exposed his son to the beauty of his native music when the pianist was just a boy. Silver uses that spicy island flavor for several of BLUES' finger-popping tunes. As a bonus, trombone great J.J. Johnson augments Silver's quintet for the second half of the date, creating a staggering front line that also includes Woody Shaw and Joe Henderson.
The title track, one of the most danceable tunes in Silver's repertoire, captures the celebratory flavor of Cape Verdean music and sets all toes tapping right from the start. The pace changes with "The African Queen," the group going from whisper to roar as the full dynamic range within each chorus of this bluesy classic is explored. Two quintessential Silver compositions, the waltzing "Pretty Eyes" and "Nutville," are presented here--the latter ...
| | Joe Henderson Inner Urge CD (1964) Remastered
Newk's Time album
$10.29 INNER URGE was Henderson's fourth date as a leader for Blue Note Records, and the first time he set out to record without his trusted friend, trumpeter Kenny Dorham. This release features "Isotope," now a well-known Henderson tune, and a lively version of the standard "Night and Day." Clearly the record's most memorable track, however, is the explorative "El Barrio," a droning piece that offers ...
