Funky Dory
$28.29 UK pressing. This 13-track album features a collection of Top 10 UK hits including 'Negotiate With Love', the defiant, breezily self-confident 'So Good' and smash hit 'Some Girls'. Come and Get It is brimming with an exciting and eclectic selection of songs. Working closely with a few of the UK's hottest talents including Richard X, Rob Davis, former S Club collaborators Jewels & Stone, and, in something of an Alisha's Attic reunion, both Karen and Shelley Poole, Rachel has made an album she's really proud of. From the frenetic 'Crazy Boys' to the melodic tour de force of 'Nothing Good About This Goodbye' to the electro ...
| | Lynyrd Skynyrd Gods & Guns CDs (2009) Special Edition
Funky Dory
$20.99 What to make of GOD & GUNS, the group's new album from Roadrunner Records? It certainly sounds like Lynyrd Skynyrd, maybe with a little more contemporary Nashville on board, and there's plenty of that Southern redneck rocker attitude on display. What might be missing however is a little more compassion and heart, two qualities that were the secret ingredients in the late Ronnie Van Zant's singing. Johnny sounds like him, sure, but where Ronnie came across slightly disappointed, wounded, and--God forbid--regretful underneath his swagger, Johnny comes across like an archetypal Southern redneck convinced that America is all about guns and God. The lead single from this set, "Still Unbroken," is a decent song, but that's about it, although the album has a big, full feel. There just aren't many songs here to go with that fullness (God & Guns was produced by Bob Marlette)--"Southern Ways" has a certain charm, maybe because it's essentially a slowed-down rewrite of "Sweet Home Alabama" with the same riff as an anchor, and "Floyd" has some ragged atmosphere going for it. ...
| | Fuck Buttons Tarot Sport CD (2009) Digipak
Funky Dory
$10.39 Fuck Buttons' Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power can't be accused of repeating themselves on TAROT SPORT. Post-rock, noise, and electronics lived in perfect (dis)harmony on their debut, STREET HORRRSING, but here the duo channel their intensity in a focused, rather than explosive, way. Hung and Power drafted Andrew Weatherall, who remixed STREET HORRRSING's "Sweet Love for Planet Earth," to produce TAROT SPORT; while the album is more overtly electronic than Fuck Buttons' previous music, Weatherall's influence is felt more in TAROT SPORT's precision. Laser-guided beats and drones propel these songs on linear trajectories, most strikingly on the opening track "Surf Solar," which shoots listeners into space with a sleekly pumping four-on-the-floor beat and sparkling electronics that give the impression of stars streaking by. The track is so aerodynamic that it doesn't get truly combustive until two-thirds of the way through--an approach TAROT SPORT repeats often, and a markedly different one from the duo's debut. Not knowing when or whether Fuck Buttons were going to drape listeners' ears with celestial drones or assault them with demonic, Wolf Eyes-style shrieks was a significant part of STREET HORRRSING's thrill. While it was probably a smart move on Hung and Power's part to not try to recapture that tension, occasionally it's missed. However, TAROT SPORT may actually succeed the most when Fuck Buttons make the biggest departures from their debut's territory. "Olympians"' euphoric loops have a heady, heavenly quality ...
| | Train Save Me, San Francisco CD (2009)
Funky Dory
$9.58 San Francisco's Train hit the charts with a bang early in the 21st century with hits like "Calling All Angels" and "Drops of Jupiter." They began as a band that courted an alternative audience and quickly traded it -- without changing their sound much -- for a more adult fanbase with mixed results. SAVE ME, SAN FRANCISCO took four years to make -- remember there was Monahan's solo album in the interim -- and involved a slew of musicians (because only Monahan, guitarist Jimmy Stafford, and drummer Scott Underwood remain from the original group), four studios in the United States and England, songwriting collaborators, and even a handful of producers, though Martin Terefe gets the final credit. The truth is it's ...

| | Mark Knopfler Get Lucky CD (2009)
Funky Dory
$15.65 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," the first song here, begins with a pennywhistle and a piano, then strings join in. Soon enough, Knopfler's distinctive conversational baritone begins calmly intoning lyrics, and eventually there are examples of his melodic fingerpicked guitar style on both acoustic and electric guitar. He even works up to a smoldering swamp rock shuffle, a la J.J. Cale, on "Cleaning My Gun." But that's as close as he comes to really rocking out. More typical is "Hard Shoulder," a ballad that employs a twangy guitar sound and comes across as a number that Glen Campbell could have had a hit with back in his late-'60s "Wichita Lineman" heyday. The tunes support Knopfler's story-songs ...

| | Chris Foster Under The Covers CD (2009)
Funky Dory
$11.49 This is a collection of some of my favorite cover songs in the Simply Acoustic format. John Lennon once said that the sign of a great song is if it can sound good with just a guitar. I took this to heart as I do all of my Simply Acoustic projects in recreating the basic beauty that these songs bring. Some of this music influenced and inspired me as a budding singer-songwriter. While some of the others I included because I simply enjoy them. I hope you find this collection enjoyable as well.
