One cliché that is frequently used in reference to the more extreme metal recordings is, "If hell had a soundtrack, this is what it would sound like." It's one of those clichés that has been overused but is nonetheless appropriate in many cases, and it certainly applies to 1349's Beyond the Apocalypse -- a nasty, harsh, brutally skullcrushing blast of Scandinavian death metal/black metal that lacks even the slightest trace of subtlety. This 2004 release is an exercise in bombast for the sake of bombast, and most of the time, 1349's vicious ferocity comes at an extremely fast tempo. There are some tempo changes on Beyond the Apocalypse -- 1349 doesn't play at breakneck speed 100 percent of the time -- but when all is said and done, it is the ultra-fast playing that defines this sledgehammer CD. Those who don't comprehend this type of extreme metal (which, like free jazz, gangsta rap, and techno, is definitely an acquired taste) will ask, "Where are the melodies? Couldn't these guys be more musical?" Well, some metal is highly musical -- Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime is, for all its loudness and aggression, every bit as musical and intricate as Duke Ellington or Joan Baez. But a band like 1349 represents metal's lunatic fringe, and Beyond the Apocalypse isn't supposed to be about melody or musicality -- raw, cathartic, painfully loud exhilaration is enough for these Norwegian tormentors and their fans in the mosh pit. 1349 can be quite predictable, and they won't win any awards for originality; countless other Nordic death metal/black metal outfits have done this type of thing. But despite its limitations and derivative nature, Beyond the Apocalypse is a decent listen if one is in the mood for pure, unmitigated sensory assault. ~ Alex Henderson

alot more black metalish than cradle of filth or opeth this is what black metal music is suposse to sound like.the guitar riffs are suppose to be hard to play.death metal riffs are supose to be hard to play.if you can understand what the singer is saying then it is not death metal or black metal.i like the guitar playing but i don't like the way the singer screams.i don't like the way death metal singers growl.not bad for this style of music Submitted by bob roberts (Mi,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Frost, you did it again This album shows some really heavy stuff, I mean pure Black Metal, reminds me of early Emperor but the main reason is because of Frost, Satyricon drummer who is also the drummer of this band, this dude destroys his drum kit in every song with the killer double bass drum like always....The production is way better than the first album wich is a big plus. Don't hesitate, buy it now!! Submitted by Ikky El Fenix (Universidad Centroamericana UCA, El Salvador) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Beyond The Apocalypse CD music
$13.58 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest ...
| | Lita Ford Wicked Wonderland CD (2009) Bonus Tracks
Beyond The Apocalypse music CDs
$14.19 Though former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford has been absent from the recording industry since 1997, she hasn't exactly been idle. After releasing Kiss Me Deadly, her final album after a string of them in the '80s and '90s, the music scene -- and the industry with it -- changed, and alternative ruled the airwaves. Ford got married to Jim Gillette, former vocalist with hair metal rockers Nitro, and started a family. In addition, she relocated to the Caribbean. Wicked Wonderland is uncharacteristic of the pop-metal she released a decade ago. It's an in-your-face metal record, but ultimately it's a very studied and calculated 21st century pop-metal record. It's an album with explicit sexual content, examining S&M, bondage, power exchanges, and all manner of kink and crave in lyrics, words, and sleeve images. Ford wrote all of these songs with her co-producers Greg Hampton and Gillette. Gillette is also either a duet partner or backing vocalist on every track here. Hampton handles bass, keyboard, and other sonic duties, and there are a pair of drummers who alternate in Chris Collier and Stet Howland. The album's first single (and longest track), "Bed," was released exclusively to Stockroom.com, one of the leading suppliers of S&M and bondage gear on the internet. Ford claims that she and her husband have carved out ...

Beyond The Apocalypse CD music
$6.49 Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
September 18, 1983 is a day that will go down in Kisstory. It was then that Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and replacement members Vinnie Vincent and Eric Carr took off their signature makeup and revealed themselves on MTV. LICK IT UP was released, and a new chapter unfolded.
Using the same production team as CREATURES OF THE NIGHT, Michael James Jackson, Simmons and Stanley came up with the same bone crunching sound as CREATURES, but with a slightly more polished feel. "Exciter" kicks off the album with a machine gun riff, which leads into Gene Simmons proclaiming he's "Not For The Innocent". The title track was a modest hit in the U.S., faired better in the U.K. and made for quite an entertaining video. "All Hell's Breakin' Loose" is a gritty streetwise track where ...
| | Yusef Lateef Psychicemotus CD (1964) Remastered
Beyond The Apocalypse music CDs
$9.89 Psychicemotus was released in 1965 and features Yusef Lateef on various flutes and tenor saxophone, Georges Arvanitas on piano, bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer James Black. And while the Coltrane era of modal and free jazz was in full swing, Lateef always followed his own muse, and continued looking forward while looking back to ancient musics. His use of bamboo and Chinese wood flutes on the title track and "Bamboo Flute Blues" added not only dimension and texture, but rhythmic invention to standard jazz forms. Yet his readings of Jerome Kern's ...
