One cliché that is frequently used in reference to the more extreme metal recordings is, "If hell had a soundtrack, this is what it would sound like." It's one of those clichés that has been overused but is nonetheless appropriate in many cases, and it certainly applies to 1349's Beyond the Apocalypse -- a nasty, harsh, brutally skullcrushing blast of Scandinavian death metal/black metal that lacks even the slightest trace of subtlety. This 2004 release is an exercise in bombast for the sake of bombast, and most of the time, 1349's vicious ferocity comes at an extremely fast tempo. There are some tempo changes on Beyond the Apocalypse -- 1349 doesn't play at breakneck speed 100 percent of the time -- but when all is said and done, it is the ultra-fast playing that defines this sledgehammer CD. Those who don't comprehend this type of extreme metal (which, like free jazz, gangsta rap, and techno, is definitely an acquired taste) will ask, "Where are the melodies? Couldn't these guys be more musical?" Well, some metal is highly musical -- Queensrÿche's Operation: Mindcrime is, for all its loudness and aggression, every bit as musical and intricate as Duke Ellington or Joan Baez. But a band like 1349 represents metal's lunatic fringe, and Beyond the Apocalypse isn't supposed to be about melody or musicality -- raw, cathartic, painfully loud exhilaration is enough for these Norwegian tormentors and their fans in the mosh pit. 1349 can be quite predictable, and they won't win any awards for originality; countless other Nordic death metal/black metal outfits have done this type of thing. But despite its limitations and derivative nature, Beyond the Apocalypse is a decent listen if one is in the mood for pure, unmitigated sensory assault. ~ Alex Henderson

alot more black metalish than cradle of filth or opeth this is what black metal music is suposse to sound like.the guitar riffs are suppose to be hard to play.death metal riffs are supose to be hard to play.if you can understand what the singer is saying then it is not death metal or black metal.i like the guitar playing but i don't like the way the singer screams.i don't like the way death metal singers growl.not bad for this style of music Submitted by bob roberts (Mi,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Frost, you did it again This album shows some really heavy stuff, I mean pure Black Metal, reminds me of early Emperor but the main reason is because of Frost, Satyricon drummer who is also the drummer of this band, this dude destroys his drum kit in every song with the killer double bass drum like always....The production is way better than the first album wich is a big plus. Don't hesitate, buy it now!! Submitted by Ikky El Fenix (Universidad Centroamericana UCA, El Salvador) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Beyond The Apocalypse CD music
$13.75 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" -- it probably helps that most traditional Christmas hymns tend to fall into the same brooding minor keys that serve as the foundation for most, if not all, heavy metal songs. While WINTER SONGS, like Twisted Sister's excellent 2006 TWISTED CHRISTMAS collection, may not be mainstream enough for the department store Santa kiosk, it's a surprisingly cohesive and listenable addition to the genre -- and if skillfully disguised in a Mannheim Steamroller jewel case, it could make Christmas morning truly joyful.

| | Rockstar Rock Star CD (2001) Original Soundtrack
Beyond The Apocalypse music CDs
$9.99 The most booty-kickin' spoof Metal group to come down the pike since Spinal Tap is Steel Dragon, the Mark Wahlberg-fronted hair band in the film ROCK STAR. Along with other '80s metal tracks and modern tunes, this soundtrack makes for a great listen.
ROCK STAR is based on Tim "Ripper" Owens, who left his Judas Priest cover band to join the real thing. The cover band in the film is Blood Pollution, who give us the catchy, hard-rocking "Wasted Generation." Steel Dragon does a full-throttle cover of Rainbow's "Long Live Rock And Roll" that retains the spirit of the original. Steel ...

| | Breaking Benjamin We Are Not Alone CD (2004)
Beyond The Apocalypse album
$10.45 When Aaron Fink and Markus James left Universal Records act Lifer to join the then-unsigned Breaking Benjamin, many hard-rock fans were skeptical. WE ARE NOT ALONE, the latter band's sophomore effort, promises to silence the naysayers for good. Led by powerful vocalist Ben Burnley, Breaking Benjamin delivers a snap-tight, streamlined brand of heavy alternative rock with occasional detours into the rhythmic funk-metal territory inhabited by Limp Bizkit and Korn.

| | Scorpions Tokyo Tapes [hip-O) CD (1978) Remastered
Beyond The Apocalypse CD music
$11.99 If you played in a hard rock band during the '70s, what were you likely to be doing circa 1978? Why, recording a live album, of course. Preferably a double vinyl set, and in Japan to boot. The Scorpions were no exception, and in fact, their Tokyo Tapes were captured only days after Cheap Trick's At Budokan in April 1978. Though hardly as inspired or successful, the Tokyo Tapes set still serves as an ideal greatest-hits collection of the Scorpions' first decade. This recording also showcases the spectacular playing (and occasionally, the dreadful singing) of guitarist Uli Jon Roth, who would soon leave the band for a misguided solo career, but displays some jaw-dropping technique here, most notably on the epic "We'll Burn the Sky." The rest of the band also puts in competent performances on such early standards as "In Trance," "Fly to the Rainbow," and "Speedy's Coming." The material on disc one is consistently strong, and though a number of pointless covers ("Houng Dog," "Long Tall Sally") and that most dreaded concert spectacle -- the drum solo -- break the flow on disc two, the band still closes strong with the crowd-pleasing Japanese folk song "Kojo No Tsuki" and frenetic versions of "Dark Lady" and "Robot Man." Ultimately, if you have any curiosity about the Scorpions' early material, Tokyo Tapes provides ...
