Although Alice in Chains enjoyed both commercial and artistic success during their heyday, it is only in hindsight that their achievements can be properly assessed. The band has proven a key influence on scores of alternative metal acts that came after them, many of which outdistanced Alice in Chains in popularity. Moreover, the band's dark, winding, drone-oriented sound can be heard in everything from screamo to the mainstream rock of the early 2000s.
THE ESSENTIAL ALICE IN CHAINS is an excellent two-disc set that provides a definitive overview of the Seattle quartet's output. Relying heavily on the band's debut, FACELIFT, and its breakthrough follow-up, DIRT, the set best represents the band's tough, grungy sound, yet balances it with eerie acoustic numbers from the JAR OF FLIES EP and elsewhere. Few compilations live up to the adjective "essential," but this fine package is the ideal distillation of this important band's work.

why do they always omit at least a couple big songs? Here we go again....as with the previous AIC collections, there always seems to be at least a few 'big' songs missing or are live or remix versions, so this was the time to get it right....and guess what...the same crap again....where are 'Down in a hole', 'Sea of sorrow' and 'Don't follow'??? With 2cds, all of 'the best' could have been included!
As it seems with most 'best of's, gold, essential, etc....' releases, there are always a few big songs purposely left out. Its just the big corporate marketing game at work leaving the door open for another 'best of' next year with yet another selection of songs in hopes to entice us again for what was missing the last time!
No wonder the music industry continues to go further down the toilet! Submitted by sam (Tampa, Fl) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 1 found this helpful.
This is good enough shell of dough for input Holy $hit! This is eerie. How many bands by now have copied their sound over the years of commercial success, ie Jar of Flies, artistic success, ie Dirt is extensively covered here. The toil is heard enough here. I mean I'm hearing they've omitted some good songs that I've heard elsewhere could've been included to fill the gap on disc 2 on this collection. Oh well {:-[ . At least they've tried [[[;-| Submitted by Hmmm ... (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 0 of 1 found this helpful.

Not quite perfect As is typical with Sony's "The Essential..." series, there are always a couple of essential tracks missing and this collection is no exception. Why in the world would they leave off "Rooster" and "Down In A Hole"? There's plenty of space for them on disc 2. Submitted by Galley (Greenville, SC, USA) Was This Review Helpful?
