In 1992, at the young age of 24, McLachlan had a very real command of the pop idiom, and her songwriting was not only mature, it was rare and exceptional. The gothic vocal piece "Mercy" and the atmospheric "Home" are quite evocative. However, the highlight of SOLACE is the poignant "I Will Not Forget You." On this track, a wash of guitars and subtle piano chords are supported by rich percussive textures (which clearly recall Peter Gabriel's seminal records). The final song on the album, "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" arrives on the heels of several dense, brooding tunes, and this radiant Donovan cover ends SOLACE on an upbeat note.

In the early days of the CD age, Motown released an astonishing number of CDs, including a whole line of single-disc sets that contained two original records on one CD. Motown's initial CD two-fers were criticized in many quarters for shoddy, unattractive packaging and indifferent remastering, but less discriminating consumers found them perfectly acceptable, since they offered a lot of music at a reasonable price. By the mid-'90s, Motown eventually phased these discs out of print, replacing them with remastered individual discs, but some of the records never were re-released on CD, which made this series valuable for Motown collectors. Mors Syphilitica is the lushly orchestrated project of husband and wife team Eric and Lisa Hammer. Feather and Fate is their third album since 1986, so they can't be accused of hurrying things. As gothic as Kenneth Anger's early cinema, or the films of F.W. Murnau, Feather and Fate is at once contemporary and timeless. Utilizing elements from the early, raw aspect of the Cocteau Twins, Eastern European folk music, classical lieder, and the darkwave gothic rock of the Cure and Gene Loves Jezebel, Mors Syphilitica carries the listener into a soundworld at once strangely foreign and somehow strikingly familiar. Eric Hammer plays all the instruments himself, and that's for good reason; he is a precision arranger and knows how to use a studio to layer his textures in such a way that the perceived excess is minimal though the atmospherics are so grand to be almost suffocating -- the feeling is one of drowning in silk.
