It's taken Sam Myers fully 50 years to make his first solo album. But he's no stranger to either stage or studio, having worked with Elmore James and Anson Funderburgh. For his debut he's assembled a top-notch band, led by guitarist Mel Brown, to work not so much behind him as with him. Brown is a standout as an accompanist, offering wonderful decoration to "I Got the Blues" and "Burning Fire." But understandably, it's Myers who's the star of the show, and his driving harmonica playing carries its own momentum, as on his version of Rice Miller's "Ninety Nine." But there's also a very pleasing grit to his singing, whether on the slow and deeply soulful"After Hours When the Joint Is Closed," or "Waitin' On Your Mama," which could have come directly from the Chicago school of blues. It might have taken him five decades to get to this, but from the music on the disc, not a single minute was wasted. ~ Chris Nickson

Blues legend Sam Myers got a second chance at the brass ring, and he's happily made the most of it. As frontman for Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, the legally blind Myers's booming voice and succinct harp work have enjoyed a higher profile recently tha

Coming From The Old School Music Review

5 stars One for the ages
First introduced to Sam Myers on "Which way is Texas", I found his voice and delivery as pointed as you can expect the Blues to be. Now with his passing Sam becomes an american blues icon. If you are a true fan of the blues, "Comming from the old school" deserves to be in your collection.

5 stars Sam just keeps getting better
Sam Myers is at the top of his form. You can tell he enjoyed making this CD. He wrote many of the songs & is backed by excellent musicians. Mel Brown does a great job, as ususal, on guitar. If you do not know Sam Myers, this is the one CD to get. I hope that Sam sings these songs with Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, with whom he has toured since the mid-80's. This album has resulted in Sam being nominated for the Handy Award this year; & he clearly deserves to win for album of the year. I hope there is more to come.

2 stars Coming from the Old Folks Home
I found this album really slow and monotonous; and Sam's voice is well past it's prime. Well past. Blues for the ages? No. Blues for the aged.
