The first seven selections on this CD reissue a 1978 duet concert featuring the quiet guitarist Ed Bickert and bassist Don Thompson. A little reminiscent of a famous Jim Hall/Ron Carter collaboration, the music alternates introspective ballads with a couple romps, including a brisk "What Is This Thing Called Love." Bickert's playing is both swinging and sophisticated, often utilizing reharmonized chords, while Thompson functions as an equal partner. The final four selections are from a previously unreleased 1976 studio set with drummer Terry Clarke making the group a quintet. For unknown reasons this session was never completed, but the music is on the same high level as the live duet performance. In fact, the subtle drumming makes it easier for the group to swing harder, with Hoagy Carmichael's "One Morning in May" being a highlight. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow

After a decade and a half of dwelling in the shadows of the vanguard jazz pantheon, saxophonist David S. Ware reaches his zenith with this rendering of Sonny Rollins' 1958 magnum opus Freedom Suite. Originally composed for performance by a trio, Ware's addition of Matthew Shipp's piano to the proceedings allows him to completely reconceptualize the entire work. Where Rollins' original bordered on atonality with restrained tension held by the rhythm section, Ware allows the dissonance free reign, or nearly so. This does not mean he doesn't follow Rollins' dictations for flow or progression, quite the opposite; it's more that Ware allows the dynamic and rhythmic invention a freer passage. In "GHOSTS OF THE MIGHTY FRASER," The Tiller's Folly have exhumed the rich and colourful past of Canada's west coast. This second album features a firey blend of Celtic flavoured ballads mixed with jigs, reels and aires. Like "THE VIEW FROM HERE" (1997) this album mixes Celtic music influences with Folk Rock, Bluegrass, Maritime and Pop."The East Coast of Canada has had a number of bands that have celebrated that area's history and musical links to it's Scottish/Irish/English roots, but the West Coast never really has had anything similar until now. The British Columbia band The Tiller's Folly is stepping in to fill that void with a historically based collection of songs that are played with a strong Celtic flavour.
