(6 Customer Reviews)
There are scores of Nashville songwriters who could build a career on writing tunes for the likes of Kathy Mattea, Pam Tillis, Chely Wright, and Patty Loveless. Not content to stop there, singer/songwriter Carolyn Dawn Johnson embarked on a performing career of her own after having her work recorded by the aforementioned artists and numerous others. Johnson's second full-length release, DRESS REHEARSAL, sounds fully on par with the Pam Tillises and Chely Wrights of the world. Like them, she retains enough of a twang to remind listeners of her country roots, but has more than a passing familiarity with popwise production. Johnson seems as comfortable with the acoustic picking at the heart of "Simple Life" as she does with the soaring melodies and anthemic, power-ballad feel of "We Talked." Neither a Shania-copping diva wannabe nor a self-consciously "authentic" neo-traditionalist, Johnson comfortably strolls down the middle of a country road, and many are sure to accompany her on the trip.

Dress Rehearsal album
$7.15 While Sara Evans hasn't assimilated the rock-pop influence into her contemporary country sound to the same bold degree as someone like Shania Twain, she's certainly informed by those sensibilities. There are plenty of rootsy touches to the arrangements here to remind us that this is Nashville, not Hollywood, but the predominance of power ballads and the quality of Evans's big, belting voice suggest what might have happened if Pat Benatar had been a country girl. One can't help wondering, for instance, how conscious the lyrical nod to the Allman Brothers' "Ramblin' Man" might be in Evans's "Backseat of a Greyhound Bus." And ...
| | Allison Moorer Duel CD (2004)
Dress Rehearsal CD music
$14.69 Once upon a time, Allison Moorer was a country artist who sang for a major record label. It might be easy then, to see her switch to Sugar Hill as a back-to-the-basics move, a reconnection with her country roots. Moorer, however, isn't that predictable, and The Duel -- while many things -- isn't country. In fact, the opening cut -- "I Ain't Giving Up on You" -- sounds a lot like classic rock and most of the album follows this course. This is interesting, in that Moorer's a strong writer, and it would've been easy to fall back on a tasteful country-folk production and become a fairly typical singer/songwriter. Instead, Moorer's plucky vocals, along with Adam Landry's electric guitar work and R.S. Field's steady backbeat, turn a song like "Melancholy Polly" into an easy-rolling romp. Another factor that makes the songs on The ...

| | Gretchen Wilson Here For The Party CD (2004)
Dress Rehearsal songs
$9.99 In the tradition of singers such as Wanda Jackson and Tanya Tucker comes Gretchen Wilson, a self-proclaimed hard-living trailer-park inhabitant with country-rock attitude to spare. The pleasant surprise with Wilson is that, in stark contrast to the streamlined country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill, she doesn't mind getting a bit dirty (musically or otherwise). Though her grassroots ethos clearly plays into her success, it's not a pose: Wilson means what she says, and her country twang, mixed with roots and mainstream rock, packs a punch.
HERE FOR THE PARTY alternates between songs about rural, working-class nightlife (particularly Wilson's love of cowboys, whiskey, and, of course, country music) and its trials and tribulations ...

| | Chris Rea New Light Through Old Windows CD (1988)
Dress Rehearsal music CDs
$9.09 New Light Through Old Windows is a significant baker's dozen of Chris Rea's early material, leading up to but not including work from his Road to Hell album. Rea's stature was always larger in the United Kingdom than in the U.S., with his only American Top 40 single coming from the newer version of "Fool (If You Think It's Over)," a re-release of the same song which failed to garner any attention the first time around. Rea's soothing voice is indeed attractive, and the ...
