(6 Customer Reviews)
There are scores of Nashville songwriters who could build a career on writing tunes for the likes of Kathy Mattea, Pam Tillis, Chely Wright, and Patty Loveless. Not content to stop there, singer/songwriter Carolyn Dawn Johnson embarked on a performing career of her own after having her work recorded by the aforementioned artists and numerous others. Johnson's second full-length release, DRESS REHEARSAL, sounds fully on par with the Pam Tillises and Chely Wrights of the world. Like them, she retains enough of a twang to remind listeners of her country roots, but has more than a passing familiarity with popwise production. Johnson seems as comfortable with the acoustic picking at the heart of "Simple Life" as she does with the soaring melodies and anthemic, power-ballad feel of "We Talked." Neither a Shania-copping diva wannabe nor a self-consciously "authentic" neo-traditionalist, Johnson comfortably strolls down the middle of a country road, and many are sure to accompany her on the trip.
Personnel: Carolyn Dawn Johnson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dann Huff (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, dobro); Gordon Kennedy (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, sitar, background vocals); Keith Urban (acoustic guitar, background vocals); John Willis (acoustic guitar); J.T. | | Julie Roberts CD (2004)
Dress Rehearsal
$12.59 Julie Roberts's bio reads like a classic success story; while working as a secretary for a Mercury Records bigwig, the singer honed her craft at night, never letting her boss become aware of her show biz aspirations. That same boss ended up signing her to a lucrative record deal, and after listening to Roberts's self-titled debut, it's easy to see why. Possessing a voice that naturally exudes melancholy soul, the South Carolina native wisely chooses material to match, foregoing lighter Nashville fare in favor of more serious songs. ...
| | Gretchen Wilson Here For The Party CD (2004)
Dress Rehearsal
$9.99 In the tradition of singers such as Wanda Jackson and Tanya Tucker comes Gretchen Wilson, a self-proclaimed hard-living trailer-park inhabitant with country-rock attitude to spare. The pleasant surprise with Wilson is that, in stark contrast to the streamlined country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill, she doesn't mind getting a bit dirty (musically or otherwise). Though her grassroots ethos clearly plays into her success, it's not a pose: Wilson means what she says, and her country twang, mixed with roots and mainstream rock, packs a punch.
HERE FOR THE PARTY alternates between songs about rural, working-class nightlife (particularly Wilson's love of cowboys, whiskey, and, of course, country music) and its trials and tribulations (romantic heartache and spiritual struggle). The runaway single, "Redneck Woman," waves the banner of the "four-wheel-drive tailgate" and standing "barefoot in my own front yard with a baby on my hip." But where the anthemic choruses of songs such as "Here for the Party" are all bravado, "Holdin' You" and "The ...

$11.29 Christian rock band Pillar found significant mainstream success with an authoritative brand of grunge-leaning nu-metal that originally featured rapping but grew increasingly melodic and pop-savvy over time. CONFESSIONS is another step forward on that evolutionary path, almost entirely leaving behind the Limp Bizkit/Korn-isms of ABOVE and FIREPROOF in favor of a streamlined, ...
