An almost forgotten musical! This is a show from the 1950s which has a very unfortunate title now. The London cast were very famous in the UK at the time. Ivor Novello had had a string of hits in the late 1930s/40s, but this was a complete deparure for him as his other musicals had Ruritanian thems and would be considered very old fashioned in this day and age. However, his melodies are still very fresh and, in the case of Gay's the Word, very much of the day. On a personal note, I have been seaching for a recording of this musical for years and, in playing it, am taken back to the time I saw it in the West End. Excellent!
