Regardless of opinions about White Stripes leader Jack White's credentials to produce country-music queen Loretta Lynn (he toured with the legendary singer and dedicated 2001's WHITE BLOOD CELLS to her), there's no denying that VAN LEAR ROSE significantly kick-started Lynn's career both commercially and artistically. In a move similar to Rick Rubin's 1990s Johnny Cash productions, White enlists members of his garage-rock cohorts the Greenhornes, along with a couple of country ringers, to back Lynn, giving her the grittiest, most rock-tinged production of her long reign.

Encouraged to come up with an album's worth of original tunes for the very first time, Lynn sounds plucky and full of fire. Her marvelous voice is as powerful and graceful as ever, as the septuagenarian singer gamely leads the band of youngsters through honky-tonk burners, bluegrass-tinged acoustic numbers, and even an evocative spoken-word recitation. Closer in spirit to Lynn's spunky '60s classics than anything she'd released in decades, VAN LEAR ROSE is built to reassemble the faithful and snare some new ears as well.

Rolling Stone (No. 948, p.70) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A] classic Loretta Lynn album. There's no Nashville glitz, no crossover schlock--as the lady used to sing, you're lookin' at country....[Jack White has] helped her make the album we all dreamed she would make."
Rolling Stone (p.146) - Included in Rolling Stone's Top 50 Records Of 2004 - "[A] one-of-a-kind classic, rootsy but deeply weird..."
Spin (p.105) - "[T]he woman who wrote 'Rated X' and 'The Pill' never worried about finger-waggers. That's why her music still matters today, and why ROSE pricks like a rueful morning after." - Grade: A
Spin (p.67) - Ranked #8 in Spin's "40 Best Albums of the Year" - "VAN LEAR ROSE may be Lynn's greatest album to date - a triumphant steel-and-rhinestones hootenanny."
Q (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[T]he effect is nothing short of remarkable....Lynn's strong, womanly tones are absolutely beguiling."
Uncut (pp.84-5) - 5 stars out of 5 - "At times, it's unerringly beautiful and soft. At others, it howls like a blue mountain banshee."
Uncut (p.74) - Ranked #3 in Uncut's "Best New Albums of 2004" - "The songs are all Lynn originals - many of the deeply autobiographical..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 5 stars out of 5 - "[A] perfect album - typically understated, characteristically jubilant, and 100 per cent Loretta Lynn."

5 stars Butcher Holler + Detroit = YOWZA!
Get back home, Loretta! And that's just what she did - with a heapin' helpin' of raw production from White Stripes phenom Jack White. Seems like a weird combo on the surface - country-steeped Loretta is 70, and neo-power-rock Jack's in his 20's, but these two clearly were connected in a former life. Listen to "Have Mercy" and you'll see what I mean. Yo' ears will burn! Every track is riveting, especially the title track and "Little Red Shoes," a freaky spoken-word vignette from Loretta's childhood. Someone should hog-tie Brooks & Dunn, lock them in a Winnebago, and force them to listen to this album until they swear never to record again. Loretta's late spouse, Doolittle Lynn, would have been so proud that she remains a vital artist after all these years. I recalled that in 1984, Loretta and Doo lost their son, Jack, in a tragic drowning. Jack White and Loretta are so connected, I couldn't help but think about reincarnation. Jack took Loretta back home, she wrote some great new songs, and in the process, they redefined what country music REALLY is. When Loretta says there's a bit of (late, legendary producer) Owen Bradley in Jack White, she's spot-on. What an inventive and powerful combination they are.

4 stars Odd Pairing!
Who would have thought that Jack White and country icon Loretta Lynn would record together. Two different styles, two different generations.I picked this up out of curiosity and was surprised at how good this collection is.Loretta is in strong voice for her age and Jack Whites influence is heard thru out the disk.As always Loretta keeps it country and Jack adds a non traditional twist to the sounds.

5 stars Essential Purchase
I am not a fan of country music, but have always admired Lorette Lynn, probably due in part to the film Cola Miner's Daughter. I bought this CD after it won a Grammy for Best Country Album. I am so glad that I did, it is probably the best album that I have bought in the past 6 months. The songs are catchy and contain those odd lyrical rhymes and phrases for which Loretta is famous (thissheers the Van Lear Rose!). This album is a real winner. If you are thinking about getting it, do so...you will not be disappointed.

5 stars Amazing
Some songs are true to her country roots, others sound like Loretta singing over a great stripped down rock band. The duet "Oregon" alone is worth the purchase price. The mood of the songs range from sweet and reflective to a rowdy night out on the town.
