(5 Customer Reviews)
Though sometimes lumped in with jam-bands (Widespread Panic, Phish), Edwin McCain is, in fact, a roots-rocker who has more in common with fellow Southern road-warriors the Connells and Hootie & the Blowfish. In addition, McCain is a polished songsmith whose efforts often recall the best work of progressive Nashville country artists Radney Foster and Rodney Crowell. With SCREAM & WHISPER, the South Carolina native turns in another set of warmly produced material, heavy with hope and heartache. Fusing bits of blues, jazz, 1980s college rock, and old-fashioned Southern boogie (of both the Lynyrd Skynyrd and Wet Willie varieties), SCREAM & WHISPER lives up to its title, exploring the full range of human emotion with an earthy romanticism that fits like a well-worn pair of leather boots.

Scream & Whisper album
$8.69 Edwin McCain is a practitioner of the same brand of middle American-sounding Cinemascope folk-rock as Hootie & The Blowfish. Big, bold arrangements leap out of the speakers, hard-hitting drums are mated with ringing acoustic guitars and lap steel. An interesting addition to the mix is saxophonist Craig Shields, who adds some unexpected instrumental shadings to the proceedings. Much of McCain's lyrical focus is on introspection, bittersweet ...

Scream & Whisper CD music
$8.69 MESSENGER is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Edwin McCain is not flashy, nor does he wish to be. He is perfectly content with writing folk-tinged ballads and mildly anthemic, midtempo rockers, much like his labelmates and fellow South Carolinians Hootie & the Blowfish. Whereas Hootie broke down the commercial doors for this breed of heartland rock, McCain simply follows the path, winding up where Hootie was after Cracked Rear View -- namely, with a solid collection of no-frills rock, one that pleases without being particularly memorable, outside ...

Scream & Whisper CD music
$11.49 Second studio album from Canadian pop-rocker Sam Roberts, recorded in Australia and Canada. Features Matt Mays and members of The Stills.
With the resurgence of interest in classic rock (did it ever really fall from fashion?), many groups have imitated the sound of the '70s, but few have so completely emulated the sweep and grandeur of that decade's best rock albums as Sam Roberts' Chemical City. The very look of the packaging highlights the glory of that era with its striking artwork, details of which appear within the equally sumptuous booklet. Back in the day, a poster of the cover would have been included; perhaps the band will sell them at their shows instead, certainly the art is worthy of it. The music, too, harkens back to the sweep of styles and atmospheres that were de rigueur of "classic" albums. "The Gate" sets the standard with a quite magnificent slab of psychedelia ...
