(5 Customer Reviews)
Though sometimes lumped in with jam-bands (Widespread Panic, Phish), Edwin McCain is, in fact, a roots-rocker who has more in common with fellow Southern road-warriors the Connells and Hootie & the Blowfish. In addition, McCain is a polished songsmith whose efforts often recall the best work of progressive Nashville country artists Radney Foster and Rodney Crowell. With SCREAM & WHISPER, the South Carolina native turns in another set of warmly produced material, heavy with hope and heartache. Fusing bits of blues, jazz, 1980s college rock, and old-fashioned Southern boogie (of both the Lynyrd Skynyrd and Wet Willie varieties), SCREAM & WHISPER lives up to its title, exploring the full range of human emotion with an earthy romanticism that fits like a well-worn pair of leather boots. Scream & Whisper
$8.69 Edwin McCain is a practitioner of the same brand of middle American-sounding Cinemascope folk-rock as Hootie & The Blowfish. Big, bold arrangements leap out of the speakers, hard-hitting drums are mated with ringing acoustic guitars and lap steel. An interesting addition to the mix is saxophonist Craig Shields, who adds some unexpected instrumental shadings to the proceedings. Much of McCain's lyrical focus is on introspection, bittersweet nostalgia and ...

Scream & Whisper
$12.95 After years without major-label support or a radio hit, Sister Hazel still had healthy album sales and a busy touring schedule in 2004. It's a good thing that the group decided to stick it out, because LIFT is one of Sister Hazel's most accomplished efforts. A hard-working road-warrior band, the Gainsville, Florida-based combo easily moves between Zippo-waving post-grunge ("Surrender"), RUMOURS-era Fleetwood Mac-style folk rock ("Hold On"), blistering Lenny Kravitz-like guitar heroics ("I ...

$11.79 "Reptile" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance.
During the recording of the follow-up to his Grammy-winning collaboration with B.B. King, Eric Clapton's uncle passed away. This loss, coupled with Clapton's struggle to get on a creative track, led to REPTILE, a reflective album driven by a number of impressive stylistic turns. Starting with the gorgeous, samba-inspired instrumental title track, ("reptile" is apparently a term of endearment from Clapton's childhood), the man formerly known as God puts his personal stamp on a number of covers while contributing a handful of stellar originals.
Among the artists getting the Slowhand treatment are old standby J.J. Cale (a chugging "Travelin' Light"), James Taylor (a simmering "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight"), and Big Joe Turner (the loping "Got You on My Mind"). Special guests the Impressions lend a gospel-flavored sheen to a slow-burning version of Ray Charles' "Come Back Baby," while adding a Jordanaires-like presence to a country-flavored take on Stevie ...
