A beautifully packaged and sequenced two-disc set, STAND BACK is the definitive overview of one of the most successful and influential blues-rock acts ever. The Allman Brothers Band were superior musicians who incorporated elements of country, jazz, and R&B into their playing, and displayed a remarkable penchant for group improvisation. The synthesis of these factors, delivered with a distinctive country-fried edge, is laid out on this excellent 32-song career retrospective.
Arranged chronologically, STAND BACK traces the evolution of the Allmans, from edge-pushing rockers (the first cut from the band's 1969 debut, "Don't Want You No More," with its shifting time signatures and jazz inflections, is almost progressive rock), to their country-rock of the '90s and 2000s. In between are fiery interpretations of blues classics by Blind Willie McTell and Muddy Waters, and songs by vocalist/keyboardist Gregg Allman and guitarist Dickey Betts, many of which ("Whipping Post," "Midnight Rider") are now blues-rock classics in their own right. With its driving, twin-drummer rhythm section, and complex organ/dual-guitar interplay, the band never misses a step on this superb collection.

Good "best of" cd. This is a good best of cd but there are obviously songs missing that should have been included but still worth buying. Submitted by 2003flht (Amory,MS) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Goosebump material I have listened to the Allman Brothers all of my life. This 2 CD set is the best of the best...a wonderful mix. Starting with Wasted Words (already been heard) ending with the High Cost of Low Living, this is really good stuff. Those rich piano rifts and talking guitars work for me. As a good musician friend says...."this is music you feel, not just hear." With roots in our awesome southern blues....these boys are clearly, the real deal. The Allman's live on... The Ultimate Soundtrack to my life Ok, I have played my Allman Brothers Decade of Hits CD so many times it finaly disintegrated in my player. The Allman Brothers are my all time favorite band. I needed a replacement for my Decades CD and the Allman's came through with this release. Everyone of my favorites is on here and more. Picture this, it's a hot summer day in the middle of July, at the Rose Hill Cemetary in Macon Georgia drinking a beer over Duane Allman's grave listening to Whipping Post and seeing Little Martha looking down on me. I will always cherish that memory. Thanks Allman Brothers for a wonderful soundtrack to my life. Buy this CD and discover the ABB if you have not already. Their best compilation! A really good compilation, probably the best compilation from Allman Brothers! But this is mostly for newcomers, because if you have most of their albums there is simply nothin new here. Submitted by Heynow! (Sweden) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
The reason for touring Ya know when I lived out in North Carolina all my friends would rave about the Allman Brothers Band, go on “tours” which at the time I thought they werein a band or something lol. But I guess they used to follow all these bands around like Allman Brothers, The Dead, etc.A total hippy gathering. Sounded like a lot of fun, I’m really bummed I missed out on all that, but now I feel a little better since I have been able to really experience there musical career. I picked up this cd not knowing anything of the Allman Brothers, and I can see why my friends followed them all over the country now. They are amazing! I highly recommend this cd to everyone who wants to really experience a musical revolution. It has all their songs from the past 35 years, good stuff y’all!
