2004's PATIENCE finds George Michael attempting to transcend his tabloid notoriety with pure musical prowess. Remarkably enough, Michael achieves this feat with a batch of songs that reaffirms the notion that artists sometimes get their best material from unsettling personal experiences. Loss plays a big part in many of these songs, whether it's the sparse piano ballad "My Mother Had a Brother" (about an uncle who killed himself in despondency over his own homosexuality) or the mid-tempo, Latin-tinged "Please Send Me Someone (Anselmo's Song)" (about an ex-lover who died of AIDS).
The British pop icon also touches on religion with the sparsely arranged "John and Elvis Are Dead," which finds him questioning Christ's existence. Despite the somber subject matter on many of the aforementioned songs and the gorgeously rendered title cut, Michael can still turn out dance-inspired fare. "Flawless (Go to the City)" features the kind of thumping beats you'd expect to hear at a velvet-rope club, and "Freeek! '04" slows down the tempo while displaying a carnal frankness on par with "I Want Your Sex."

Q (4/04, p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 - "It is by turns funny, dark, ridiculous, exhilarating, and - most strikingly of all - relentlessly personal." Mojo (Publisher) (4/04, p.103) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A]n oddly experimental record, prioritising texture over tune and betraying a river-deep confessional streak....A record of conviction..." George Michael Patience Songs Patience Music Review Average Rating: (4.1 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Precious Precious Box seems to be the only winner on this set. Wish there was an extended play of it. Get it for that song and maybe the rest will grow on you. Submitted by carey c (KC, MO USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A great and poignant effort I must admit, I am not a hardcore George Michael fan, but this is definately a worthwhile CD. There are many different feelings pent up in here. He manages to cover so many styles of music and lyrics and there are times when you have to ask, "this is George Michael?!" I was impressed with his ability to get his point across without being so outwardly blatent, as in his song "Outside". There is even a picture of his beau inside (although camera shake blurs it a bit!) All in all I would recommend this CD as a great and poignant effort for him. Wish I had one Haven't heard any of his songs in quite a while, this must be good.
Can anyone out there help me get one.? Submitted by Plyman (Tabubil,W.P, PNG) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Amazing George Michael is the one artist who could sing the Dictionary, or a phone book and it would sound great. One of the best voices in the business. This album shows off his vocals, it has not classic song like "TOO FUNKY" or "FREEDOM" no big beat song, but the album pays off. Shoot the dog is missing from the US version, which is to bad, the song is choice, the falsetto makes the song. Good CD. His best since LWOP. Not saying much, but its a quality album. Patience album
$13.05 SONGS FROM THE LAST CENTURY was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
Whatever you want to say about the ubiquitous George Michael, you can't brand him as lacking in the confidence department. It somehow isn't surprising that he would take it upon himself to capture the legacy of the past hundred years on SONGS FROM THE LAST CENTURY. What is surprising are the unique choices--this isn't a standard set of standards. George has managed to span and reflect the last hundred years with 10 tracks, few of which come close to belonging to that fraternity of the century's hackneyed covers.
The songs are all presented, whether they be Depression-era ballads ("Brother Can You Spare a Dime") or punk/new wave anthems ("Roxanne"), in a blowsy, ...
| | Wham Make It Big CD (1984)
Patience CD music
$7.59 The title was a promise to themselves, Wham!'s assurance that they would make it big after struggling out of the gates the first time out. They succeeded on a grander scale than they ever could have imagined, conquering the world and elsewhere with this effervescent set of giddy new wave pop-soul, thereby making George Michael a superstar and consigning Andrew Ridgeley to the confines of Trivial Pursuit. It was so big and the singles were so strong that it's easy to overlook its patchwork qualities. It's no longer than eight tracks, short even for the pre-CD era, and while the four singles are strong, the rest is filler, including an Isley Brothers cover. Thankfully, it's the kind of filler that's so tied to its time that it's fascinating in its stilted post-disco ...

A direct descendant from the pedigree of one of the 20th century's virtuosos, Norah Jones might not be on such a lofty artistic level as her dad Ravi Shankar, but certainly inherited some musical intuition from him. With nary a sitar nor raga within earshot, the young newcomer sounds very much an assimilated, western, 21st century pop-jazz singer. One thing that separates her from the pack is Ms. Jones' own ...
