| | LaBelle Nightbirds (Millenium) CD - Import LaBelle Discography of CDs
After two commercially unsuccessful albums for Warner Brothers, LaBelle moved to Epic in 1974 to record the brash, deeply funky NIGHTBIRDS. Helmed by famed New Orleans producer, arranger, and hit-maker Allen Toussaint, NIGHTBIRDS mixes sassy New Orleans R&B with hard-driving funk and LaBelle's soulful, often eclectic, take on girl-group dynamics. On the strength of Toussaint's horn-driven arrangements and the album's runaway smash single, "Lady Marmalade" (with its immediately memorable French refrain), NIGHTBIRDS shot up the charts.
The remainder of the album measures up to the standard set by its single, especially on the sly groover "Don't Bring Me Down" and the thumping "Are You Lonely?" Patti LaBelle's agile soprano alternately soars and seeks out gritty corners, while Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash providing airtight, in-your-face harmonies. The glam-inflected "Space Children" and "Nightbird," a theatrical ballad, may date the album a bit, but that is part of the fun of this classic, good-time funk-fest.

Nightbirds (Millenium)
$9.45 From the idiosyncratic art rock of their self-titled debut to the seductive pop of albums like AVALON, Roxy Music covered a lot of ground, but COUNTRY LIFE, which falls somewhere in between, synthesizes all of their strengths. Singer Bryan Ferry's vision of sophisticated, "gentleman" rock emerges on this release, yet the strident, driving quality crucial to the band's early sound still looms large. The combination of textures is exhilarating, and the songwriting--which draws on elements of R&B, cabaret music, and glam rock--is among the band's best.
Standouts include "Bitter-Sweet," a clear homage to the bombast and fading glory of German cabaret ...
| | Who Sell Out CD (1967) Remastered
Nightbirds (Millenium)
$6.55 This 1995 reissue of THE WHO SELL OUT includes songs and jingles not available on the original version.
Originally released on Track (612002/613002). Released in the U.S. on Decca (4950/74950) in 1968.
Only three albums into its recording career, the Who had already begun to distance itself from its proletarian R&B beginnings. Here, songwriter Pete Townshend follows up on the rock-opera idea he had introduced on A QUICK ONE with the extended, multi-part composition "Rael" and would later expand upon ...
| | Chicago VI CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Nightbirds (Millenium)
$6.39 The album on which Chicago fully dropped its early jazz-rock roots and went strictly pop, 1973's CHICAGO VI features two of the band's finest singles, the romantic "Just You 'N' Me" and the uplifting "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," along with a solid set of album tracks. Although Robert Lamm's solo piano ballad "Critics' Choice" reveals a thin skin concerning the group's poor reviews from the hipster press, Terry Kath's "What's This World Coming To" and Lamm's dreamy "Something in This City Changes People" are nearly as strong as the big hits. Elsewhere, the country-fried "In Terms of Two" proves an interesting stylistic detour. Chicago has always been a definitive singles band, but those looking to explore ...

Nightbirds (Millenium)
$13.59 Sweet originally began as a pre-packaged pop outfit for the producers/songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. By combining the crunch of hard rock with the hooks of bubblegum pop, the pair provided Sweet with its first handful of mindlessly effective hits in the early glam soaked '70s, notably "Little Willy," "Blockbuster," "Wig Wam Bam," and "Ball Room Blitz." Underneath this teen-pop glitz however, a real rock and roll band was smoldering. Determined to make its own statement and get out from under the Chinn-Chapman control center, ...

Nightbirds (Millenium)
$30.55 First released in 1974, by which time the name Sly Stone had become a byword for missed shows and drug dependency, SMALL TALK nevertheless contains some sparks of life. The album's sound is very much in the FRESH mold, with tightly recorded bass and keyboards to the fore, while Stone's vocals, though increasingly wasted-sounding and bolstered by the Little Sister vocal group, still have moments of authority..
As evidenced by the cover picture, and song titles like "Mother Beautiful" and "Time ...
