Foggy Mountain Breakdown
$12.59 Live Recording
Personnel: George Jones (vocals); Rhonda Vincent (vocals, background vocals); Dolly Parton (vocals); Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano); Glenn Worf (bass guitar); Sheri Copeland (background vocals); Bruce Watkins (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar, dobro); Larry Franklin (mandolin, fiddle); Eddie Bayers (drums); John Wesley Ryles, Liana Manis, Marty Slayton (background vocals). Audio Mixers: Hank Williams; John Kelton. Recording information: Sound Station, Nashville, TN; Starstruck, Nashville, TN; Wedgewood Studio, Nashville, TN. Photographer: Dennis Carney. The idea for Hits I Missed...And One I Didn't is a good one: George Jones looks back over the years and picks songs that he originally declined to record, only to see other artists having hits, sometimes very big hits, with them. This is a clever concept in a couple of ways, since it not only gives a glimpse at what could have been (not just for George, but for the artists who had the hits -- imagine if Bobby Bare never had a big break into the country charts with "Detroit City"), but it gives a strong, ...

| | Iris Dement My Life CD (1993)
Foggy Mountain Breakdown
$8.39 Live Recording
Personnel: Iris DeMent (vocals, acoustic guitar); Richard Bennett (acoustic & electric guitars); "Cowboy" Jack Clement, Mark Howard (acoustic guitar); Al Perkins (dobro); Stuart Duncan (fiddle); John Catchings (cello); Phil Parlapiano (accordion); Charles Cochran, Pete Wasner (piano, keyboards); Roy Huskey Jr. (acoustic bass); Pat McInerney (drums); Kenny Malone (percussion); Joy White (background vocals). Recorded at The Cowboy Arms Hotel and the Recording Spa, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Iris DeMent. MY LIFE was nominated for Best Contemporary Folk Album in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Like Infamous Angel, My Life opens on a light note, which is hardly adequate preparation for the emotional turbulence that follows. The album is dedicated to Iris Dement's father, who passed away prior to its release, and although there are some scattered moments of joy here, they are largely absorbed by a collection of songs dealing with primal anguish and longing. DeMent's writing has hardened a bit, producing her most mature and encompassing song in "No Time to Cry," which serves as an anchor for the album's rich sentimentality and is also an indication, in its social obsessions, of the direction her next album would take. Elsewhere, DeMent's songcraft remains exceptional but, as before, the true magic is in her voice, which imbues even the simplest songs with perfect, pure emotion. Highlights include Maybelle Carter's "Troublesome Waters," "Easy's Gettin' Harder Every Day," and a terrific rendition of Lefty Frizzell's "Mom and Dad's Waltz." The gorgeous title track closes the album, a piano-cello duet that is one of her most moving performances. For those who appreciate DeMent's rough-hewn voice, it is nearly impossible to exaggerate the beauty of these recordings. ~ Jim Smith From the opening notes of "Sweet Is The Melody," the listener is transported by Iris DeMent's simple dignity and grace. Listening to MY LIFE is like thumbing through an old sepia-toned photo album or riding the buckboards on your way home from a little rural church. The high lonesome timbre of Iris DeMent's soprano, the yodeling cry that colors her vocal ornaments, the crystalline grace of her acoustic guitar, all these bespeak a much simpler, more innocent time. And today, when rhinestone cowboys and Arbitron ratings have eclipsed the folk lineage of country ...

| | Eliane Elias Around The City CD (2006)
Foggy Mountain Breakdown
$7.59 Personnel: Eliane Elias; Dave Valentin, Adam Rodgers , Lester Mendez, Marc Johnson , Andres Levin, Oscar Castro-Neves, Pedro Martinez, Peter Scherer , Randy Brecker, Vicente Amigo. Eliane Elias has moved further and further into mainstream pop in recent years, and Around the City continues that course. Having begun as a member of the jazz ensemble Steps Ahead, she ventured tentatively into solo recordings in the late '80s, maintaining her solid commitment to jazz while never failing to bridge her adventurous tendencies with the Brazilian traditions that were her birthright. On recent albums she's been redefining herself, shifting from a role as a strictly instrumental musician to building a rep as a vocalist who (singing in both English and Portuguese) accompanies herself on piano and occasionally lets loose with a startling, stunning solo. Jazz and Brazil still figure largely into the makeup of her music ("Slide Show," "Chiclete Com Banana"), but sometimes just barely. Elias radically reinterprets Bob Marley's "Jammin'" as a nearly unrecognizable dance tune here, but she reclaims Beck's "Tropicalia" for Brazil -- a natural for Elias to cover, her take is faithful to the original's structure and brings ...
