Known for creating hypnotic electronica in which fragments of airy female vocal melodies weave through pulsating layers of rhythms, Dutch DJ Tiesto is one of the most noted producers/remixers in progressive dance music. JUST BE continues Tiesto's forays into beat-based trance music, and his trademark sonic elements--floating vocals, eerie synth textures, and incessant, high-energy beats--are all present and accounted for.
"Forever Today," which opens the album, features a building, swelling orchestral fanfare before launching into a flurry of breakneck beats. Surging compositions (particulary "Love Comes Again" and "Nyana"), complete with the requisite electro-hi-hat, conjure visions of late-night ravers contorting wildly, their waving hands illuminated by psychotropic light displays. The real surprise comes with the ghostly, lovely "UR;" the closest Tiesto gets to conventional song structure, this track recalls Japan, Nick Drake, and Radiohead, while still maintaining his lush electronica sound. A clever, twitchy reading of Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" closes things out, putting a cap on 78 minutes of innovative DJ music.

Just Be music CDs
$13.49 WOGL Oldies 98 presents the 10th Anniversary Edition, Vol. 3: Best of the 70's collects 24 classic rock & roll and pop-rock tracks that are perennial favorites on the Philadelphia radio station, including the Carpenters' "Close to You," Diana Ross' "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," Tom Jones' "She's a Lady," Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Knock Three Times," Meatloaf's "Two out of Three Ain't Bad," Vicki Sue Robinson's "Turn the Beat Around," Grass Roots' "Temptation Eyes," Gladys Knight & Pips' "Midnight Train to Georgia," Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World" and Don McLean's "American Pie." It's a solid but unexceptional oldies collection that should please casual fans; more dedicated collectors will find its predictable song selection a little frustrating and the disc a little unnecessary. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
This 21-track compilation is both foolproof and utterly predictable. There are certain songs that seem to turn up over and over on compilations (they must be available for licensing cheap), songs like KC & the Sunshine Band's "That's the Way I Like It," Pilot's "Magic," Rod Stewart's "Maggie May," Looking Glass' "Brandy," and the Hollies' "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress." Of course, they're all here. But these are all dependable hits, the kind that you hear continually on oldies radio: 17 out of 21 were gold or platinum records, and 14 hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. They tend to mark significant events in their creators' careers: seven were the artists' first hits; 12 were the biggest hits they ever had. Neil Sedaka's "Laughter in the Rain" was his first chart entry in almost nine years, sparking his '70s comeback. The musical styles range from Don McLean's singer/songwriter epic "American Pie" to Vicki Sue Robinson's disco standard "Turn the Beat Around," with plenty of pure pop in between, much of it by one-hit wonders like Redbone, though several big names are also included. Of course, a 21-track album can't provide a definitive look at a decade in pop music, but it can be representative, and this one is. Yet it is likely that, if you didn't hear these songs often enough in the '70s to get sick of them, you probably have since on oldies stations. (Note that this identical album has also been issued by Collectables as Oldies 103 FM WODS Boston: The '70s Tenth Anniversary Album and as WCBS-FM 101.1: The Anniversary Album: ...

| | Fold Compilation CDs (2003)
Just Be CD music
$16.19 This two-CD, 29-track 2003 release documents acts that have passed through the Los Angeles club the Fold, though not every one was Los Angeles-based. Too, these were not recorded in the Fold itself. They're tracks licensed specifically for this compilation, some of them previously unreleased, but most of them available elsewhere as well, though some of them were released in relatively hard to find spots, on import B-sides and the like. There's nothing specific linking these artists except their appearances at the Fold, though virtually all of them have an indie rock guitar orientation. Although a few of them had some recognition outside of L.A. by the time of this release, like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Gwendolyn, and the Warlocks, most of the acts had a pretty low international profile (if they had one at all). Consequently, it's like many indie rock compilations in that it's too diverse to detail fully in a single-paragraph review, and will probably only be of value to future generations if one or more of the obscure artists eventually become a lot more famous. As such comps go, however, it's a little above average, presenting varying competent approaches by early-21st century indie rockers and alternative singer/songwriters, though few of the individual tracks are too noteworthy. Some of the tracks more apt to make you look up from what you're doing include Dengue Fever's "New Year's Eve," which has an authentic touch of Asian bubblegum courtesy of their Cambodian lead singer, Chhom Nimol; Devendra Banhart's creepy "Cada Casa Que Crece," which sounds like a lo-fi folk field recording; the updated '50s rock ballad sound of Bedroom Walls' "Do the Buildings & Cops Make You Smile?"; the blissed-out pop-psych of Alaska!'s "In My Time"; and the Polyphonic Spree's quite late-'60s Beatles-ish "It's the Sun." It also includes bonus MPEG videos of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (playing live) and Midnight Movies. ~ Richie Unterberger

Includes 2001 video footage of BRMC live at The Fold in Silverlake Lounge. Just west of downtown Los Angeles, the Silverlake district is harboring one of the nation's most exciting independent music scenes. This double enhanced CD features mostly studio performances of artists from The Fold, a Silverlake club. Silversun Pickups are named after the Silversun Liquor Store at the corner of Sunset and Silverlake Blvds, just across the street from the Silverlake Lounge. Get it?Disc 1 features a rare demo of "Rusted Wheel" by Silversun Pickups, and a rare BRMC track "Loaded Gun".
