Meus Caros Pianistas album
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's "Sing," the Sesame Street song that gained popularity when the Carpenters performed it (Emilio Delgado, aka Sesame Street's Luis, duets with Forbes here in Spanish ...

| | Richard Harris Macarthur Park CD (1997)
Meus Caros Pianistas songs
$11.19 MACARTHUR PARK goes beyond the famous hit title track to explore the recorded work of stage and screen actor Richard Harris, including his versions of "Paper Chase" and "Name Of My Sorrow."
This CD reissue from England is almost (but not quite) identical to Raven Records' Richard Harris: The Webb Sessions 1968-69 from Australia, combining the contents of the albums A Tramp Shining and The Yard Went on Forever. The difference is the absence of the last Richard Harris-Jimmy Webb collaboration, "One of the Nicer Things," which appeared as a free-standing single in 1969. Alan Hodgson's annotation is slightly less informative than the notes by Jimmy Webb on the Raven CD. On the other hand, this disc is also about $3-$5 cheaper, so budget-minded fans may appreciate it. As for the sound, it is superior to any of the LP versions of A Tramp Shining, with Webb's reliance on stereo separation for important timbral effects coming through bright and sharp throughout -- a small, muted string orchestra coming up opposite an electric guitar and bass on one song, an electric ...
| | Claude Challe Buddha-Bar, Vol. II CDs
Meus Caros Pianistas album
$40.49 Claude Challe's Buddha-Bar, Vol. II compilation has elements of Far Eastern spirituality, African song, European electronica, and Spanish spice. The first album, Buddha-Bar, is very mellow for the most part. Deepak Chopra and Demi Moore, far and away the most recognizable names on the album, do a spoken word ditty on love and self-worth. People who are not fans of new age doctrine will appreciate artists such as Oliver Shanti and Consuelo Luz, both of whom contribute songs that manage to sound musical, spiritual and ethnic at once. The second album varies from hallucinatory to groovy to fairly high-energy. "Tears Inshalla" will appeal to fans of Eastern-influenced trance. Lyrics are of almost no importance on the album. They do exist on most tracks, but they bounce around from English to Portuguese to Arabic. Bits and pieces and snatches of phrases come through here and there -- just enough to make a listener feel in sync with it all. This music is intended to be an ambient journey, and while a few of the tracks seem to stray off into Never Never Land, the majority of them should appeal to fans of worldbeat. ~ L. Katz

| | Hank Crawford Tight CD (1996)
Meus Caros Pianistas music CDs
$12.19 There's little doubt that alto saxophonist Hank Crawford has been one of most durable and enjoyable performers in soul-jazz. His sweet and saucy sound served employers like Ray Charles reliably, while appealing to listeners who might be curious as to where more commercial players like David Sanborn and Grover Washington, Jr. (Crawford looks a lot like Washington on the back cover) acknowledged no small measure of inspiration. A quintessential section man and soloist himself, here Crawford either leads an organ combo on ballads, does songs inspired by singers, or fronts an occasional nonet with a five-piece horn section, including longtime compatriots David "Fathead" Newman and Howard Johnson. This is an effort that suggests, as Bob Porter refers to in his liner notes, a "summation" of Crawford's entire career. He adds the hats of arranger and conductor to these proceedings, picking various standards, R&B tunes, post-bop numbers, and three originals. For fans or newcomers, this might yield mixed results, but one has to realize how much music Crawford has played over his long and fruitful career. The disco-funk "I Had a Dream," written by Hubert Laws, should not surprise those who knew the saxman from his CTI/Kudu recordings of the '70s. Nor should one think his funky full-horn take of George Benson's soppy pop hit "Breezin'" is an anomaly. Closer to Crawford's great groove home is the contrasting dual sax shuffle with Newman on Bobby Womack's "Don't Start Nuttin', Won't Be Nuttin'," while the original "Midnight Blues" is the hippest of 12-bar jams. The treat of the date is Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower," a relaxed version with pianist Danny Mixon's modal piano à la McCoy Tyner firing up Crawford's strained sax, stepping up to a hot calypso beat. Mixon is the organist on the ballads, which Crawford plays so well. The sobbing sounds of "If It's the Last Thing I Do," sweet and stirring "Mona Lisa," and heartfelt "Everything I Have Is ...
